What happens if you combine Marble Hornets, House of Leaves and the Legend of Zelda all into one hellishly scary story? You get Ben Drowned.
Ben Drowned is a surprisingly effective (and unbelievably horrifying) alternate reality game. Initially, when the idea of a tormented spirit haunting a 'Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask' cartridge is put forth to you, you'd probably chuckle at the absurdity. I certainly did when I first heard about it. After I saw the videos and understood the ARG, I stopped laughing and lost quite a bit of sleep, and during the day I found myself not able to not focus on much else. I even had some nightmares related to it.
No really. I'm not kidding. If you thought Marble Hornets was disturbing, then I suggest you avoid Ben Drowned entirely. I'm not kidding.
Assuming you really want to be scared off your knickers, enter the world of Ben Drowned:
The story begins with an antisocial Welsh university student we know only by his YouTube account: Judasable. He comes across a yard sale where a spidery man sells, among other things, a copy of 'Majora's Mask' for the Nintendo 64.
Being a retro gaming enthusiast, and a happy owner of a still functioning Nintendo 64, he jovially buys it and takes it to his dorm to play it between classes.
A few hours in, Judasable begins to notice something is terribly wrong with the game, wondering if he had gotten a faulty copy. A few more days into playing the game, the oddities become so intense that he makes use of a capture card to record them, just to prove that some freaky ass shit is going on.
After a while, it becomes evident to him that the ghost of a drowned boy, one who immensely enjoyed the Legend of Zelda, is haunting his cartridge, which previously belonged to him.
