I love jazz. Bebop, bossa nova, acid, soul jazz, Latin jazz, cool jazz, new wave jazz, hard bop, God knows so many different variety. It's a passion of mine. I ascribe a measure of existential quality to jazz, it's the kind of music I listen to when I'm feeling calm, reflective, and retrospective.
It's also the kind of music I associate with urban environments. It can be calm and smooth, or wild and anarchic. There's something fun and romantic about this genre that I adore.
Anyone else feel that way about a music genre?
Rock or metal I listen to when I want to kick ass. Jazz when I've put on my existential philosopher's cap... and when I want to simultaneously kick ass.

Pure jazz is something I have to be in a mood to listen to. I like the free flowing spontaneous nature of it but I think I actually have to SEE to really appreciate it. Somehow a jazz music recording seems to have a tainted soul because every time you listen to that recording it is the same but jazz is in actual fact different with every performance. I like most types of music, but lately I seem to want to cram as many different types of music into one listen or even song as possible. I guess that's why I like Dream Theater, Symphony X and Ayreon so much. They are all like like everything flavoured chips in music form. I enjoyed driving my co-workers nuts listening to classical music at one of my old jobs for hours at a time. It was very calming and exciting to listen to at the same time. However I worked with a bunch of boobs who would rather listen to rap or trance music. Rap is OK in small doses, and trance for me is never OK unless you are high which I never am.

I enjoy it, but I have little to no memory of what pieces or artists I enjoy. I like the popular recordings from the era though, and many of those include Jazz

Jazz is great, though I'm not as well-versed in it as you appear to be, Quad. I have a hard time getting into the crazier stuff like Bebop (and I can't handle Ornette Coleman!), but I do like a lot. Dave Brubeck is awesome.
Of course this is his most famous song, but it's great. I like the way he blends classical and jazz together. Blue Rondo is another great example.

As good a place as any to drop this. Brilliantly done.
Oh and I'm a fusion kind of a guy. Frank Zappa, John McLaughlin, Vai, that end of the scale.

Ok... forget anything I said about Metallica getting their balls back. They can't even find the ghostly outline where their balls used to be.

Don't get me wrong: I like jazz well enough, especially Coltrane and Miles Davis. But Metallica and jazz don't mix that well. And this is from a guy who's been looking to pick up jazz to help with his improv for solos.
