One way for me to tell how much I like a game is how long I've played it. In that criteria alone there are 2 contenders. ME 2 and Star Wolves 3 with an honorable mention to Alpha Protocol.
Mass Effect 2 gets an obvious nod for both writing and gameplay. The main trouble I have is that it is a little too schitzo between an action game an RPG. On the Vanilla game alone ME 2 is a little closer to the other 2. With the Shadow Broker DRM it is well ahead.
Alpha Protocol was a game that surpassed my expectations in writing, but was too buggy to be a game of the year. If it was more polished it would have been the best game I played in 2010.
Star Wolves 3 Civil War was a great indie game. I put literally over 150 hours in that game and i am still not bored of it. I cannot say that of very many games made in the last 10 years. It is on the buggy side as well so it cannot realy be a GOTY so the award goes to ME 2.

Red Dead Redemption. It had suprisingly good writing, acting and motion capture, as well as being a delight to play. That fact it had Undead Nightmare, which was very reasonable priced, is just the icing on the cake.

Damn those console exclusives! That really looked like a good one, I'll just never be able to play it.

I gotta say Red Dead Redemption was more interesting than Mass Effect 2, though the former was much more anticipated.

Mine ended with a close three-way tie between Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Fallout: New Vegas, and Red Dead Redemption, especially since AC:B delivered a fantastic follow-up story along with addicting multiplayer. Mass Effect 2 ranked high, but...that's a complicated one.
But RDR definitely pulled out in the lead there. I loved the story (especially the ending), I loved the freedom, the characters, how familiar the world became. I still boot it up every now and then just to roam around. =D

I'd like to chime in again and mention the soundtrack, which I forgot: Far Away and Deadman's Gun had to be the highlights.

I've not played many of these games (either because I don't have a console or my poor laptop would explode if I tried) but of the 2010 games I did play, ME2 has to be the undisputed winner.

But it was a good year for games, hey?

I loved ME2 on the first playthrough, then the plot holes and other inconsistencies began to annoy me on the second run, etc.. Still, that probably wins my nomination for GOTY.

Yeah I'd have to say ME2 as well which is kind of weird cause it was my first game of 2010.

Yeah, I think I'll compile them into this order:
1. Mass Effect 2 2. StarCraft II 3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
