As I continue to work on my fic the Anima Chronicles, Im constantly having to scale back on what Ive wanted to do, from the ultimate number of characters to the length of scenes. Its my own fault of course, my ambition has far outstripped what I can realistically squeeze into one story, even one i anticipate to be 30+ chapters. Its a little sad just looking back on the first eight to see what Ive left out.
So my question is has anyone else had their ambition going into a fic ever become a victim of the cutting room monster? Im still happy with how its gone, but its definitely become a different creature than what i intended.

Yep. All the time. Right now, my mess of a novel- in- progress is a mighty fine example. I have several scenes that I thought I would write (they appear in my outline) which never saw the light of day. The characters kept going and finding new ways to get themselves into trouble that I never anticipated. In some ways, what happened ended up being better than what was planned (I think; I may well go "OMFG what was I thinking!" when I revise it). Prior to that, when it comes to ME fanfic, I can safely say that "Bad Night in Flux" definitely did not turn out like I originally planned (and it doesn't look like "The Lies We Tell Ourselves" is going to turn out like I thought it would either).

Occasionally I am surprised in a good way, its a good feeling when the story takes a turn even the writer didn't anticipate. More often tho im left lamenting what i had to remove. I get pretty long winded when it comes to character development, so that's usually the first to go : (
Am glad I'm not the only one tho lol
