Buch mentioned that he considered putting one up a couple of weeks ago, but since he hasn't, I figure why not?
I should mention that I recently joined an in-the-flesh writer's group that meets at my college once a month (and they're responsible for posting links to sites like 100words.com in the first place), so that's probably going to be the usual source for these, though I'll try to throw in or make up one option specifically for SF/F.
There are no deadlines or word length restrictions (at least for now). If people like the idea, I'll try to remember to post one next month, but I can't promise to remember during November (NaNoWriMo month ), so... eh, we'll figure it out then.
**Write a story or a poem based on this line from e.e. cummings: "the weak noise of her eyes easily files my impatience to an edge"
**Write a story based on this segment of "Futurama":
"Fry, remind me. Disemboweling in your species--fatal or non-fatal?"
"Fatal."
"Large bet on myself in Round One!"
**If you've got at least 3 hours of spare time: once every hour, write about what you hear, smell, taste, touch, and see. Pay attention to how you sit, too. Do you put your hand on your chin while you write? Play with your hair? How does your breathing sound? Are your feet touching the floor? Are you barefoot? Is the floor cold? (Speaking from personal experience, this is a good exercise for those of us who have a good handle on dialogue and forget the other stuff in a story. Ideally, you should aim for 6-8 hours, but if you've only got 2-3 hours, go with that.)
Edit 10/5/10: Screw it, I'm putting up this one earlier than planned, because the writing group's current challenge for this month is too similar to last month's (and we won't have a "normal" one for next month due to NaNoWriMo). It's definitely got ME in mind.
** Here we go: Write a background story on any ME character (ideally NOT Shepard) based on the song "Army" by Ben Folds Five. It can happen before or after the ME trilogy (I doubt it would work during, but hey, if you think it could...).
The vid's got two obscenities, so don't have the volume cranked at work.
I put the lyrics here.
Posting your results here is entirely up to you, of course (especially if you do the third one).
Have fun!
