I noticed a conversation similar to this when I was browsing another thread, but was wondering what the general opinion was. Usually I avoid crossovers with the proverbial fifty-foot pole, because more than fics in general do, they tend to be bad. But have you discovered any good ones? Written any good ones? Any tips on how not to fail?
Not that I'm planning on writing one, although Mass Effect2/Assassin's Creed2 is more plausible than one would think. lol

There's a series of Stargate/Buffy crossovers that's pretty good. It's really long and detailed, so if you're just looking for a casual read then it probably isn't for you. www.tthfanfic.org/Series-685Also the site it's on is dedicated to Buffy crossovers, most of which won't melt your eyes. I haven't really found any Mass Effect crossovers that jump out at me yet, but I can see how one with assassin's creed would work.

Well... I've never read one I liked. I just don't see much point in them, from a storytelling perspective. But as I say, I haven't seen one I liked yet. if I do, I'll change my tune.

I can't remember reading a crossover story that was really done well and didn't feel cheesy or stupid (and I've tried a few over the years). They can be interesting purely to explore 'what if' scenarios though. It doesn't stop me reading them, either.

That Buffy one does have some very nice writing. I'll keep it in mind to possibly read further.
I think I understand what you mean about storytelling purposes. If you can't do something in one fandom, why pull in another one and break the world to fill in your own gaps? Crossovers tend to be just for the lulz and the visual oddness of it all.
Now that I think about it, the closest I've written to something like this is an Empire Strikes Back/KotOR time-travel fic.

Hmm... that's a good question. In practice, writing a good crossover fic is harder than writing a good crack fic, mainly due to die hard fans get twitchy as soon they see a fic stepping out of the canon lore, even it's a slightest change.
Another thing why crossovers don't work most of the time I think it's due to the mix and matching. I would throw up as soon someone did a Kingdom Hearts/ME crossover... I think I've almost threw up a little in my mouth just by mentioning it.
But that's my two cents. I've don't have a deep knowledge of Crossover fics, mainly I don't read those or write them. Guess I'm not the right person to ask about.

I think you hit some good points, Tillian. I've read some strange crossovers in the past. The usual (like Starwars/Trek) are pretty typical, but the strangest one I ever read was an Aliens/Harry Potter mix... 'nuff said.

Oh yeah, talking about strange crossovers, I've stumbled upon the "terrible crossover idea" generator a few months back. It's was hillerious to hit the generator button for a few good laughs. While we're there, I wouldn't mind to see a Star Control/Mass Effect crossover or a Wing Commander/Mass Effect crossover... I might actually read those.

Well the only Fanfic that I have completed is a crossover. The Kaidan Effect a ME/Kotor crossover. It was for fun and writtin in one afternoon cause I was bored and it's in script format So uh yeah you all should check it out. All the members that have been active on here for a LONG time, like Buch and Till, know that I take any chance I get to 'promote' my one fanfic Anyway yeah I would usually only read crossovers if they are funny and make no sense.

The Kaidan Effect was good! I've begun to think that the best crossovers are the ones that don't take themselves too seriously, and are willing to be a little silly at times - though there's a line there as well, that if crossed makes it too ridiculous and there's where I'll lost interest. What can I say, I'm a picky reader!

@ Till: Mass Effect would be more fun if the Illusive Man was a big friendly man in a t-shirt, giving you hints and folding his arms instead of betraying you and smoking. "Welcome back, Commander, it's good to see you in one piece! Try getting bigger loads of minerals."
@ Hodster: The Kaidan Effect was fantastic. That's worth promoting! (Plus I promote my stuff every second of every day xD ).

I almost forgot about that. Yes, The Kaidan Effect is one a few good crossover fics I can think off at the time top of my head so far.

Did anybody read Madnesshero's Anima Chronicles in the story section? I was meaning to ask all of you about it.
I never actually finished it, but what read I actually enjoyed. I just looked at it in its own light, and kind of ignored the crossover elements and I found it to be quite good in the writing sense.
EDIT: Woah, speak of the devil, he just updated it recently.
