As a hardline atheist and son of a hardline Socialist, I imagine that most religions were created as tools to control the lower classes.
Also I would like to point out that it is a goddamn shame that Star Wars was not written during the copper age.

I want to be a Jedi now. You know its not to late to make it a religion.
Like I said Knighty, I have no diea what my point was in my last post. I was making post-ASDA ramblings and a joke about the bible. No I don't truely believe it was written by some drunk arabs. I rather more think it was written by some wealthy guys who probably did drink a good quantity of wine and came up with ideals for people to live by written in away for peasants to understand. It also probably did have something to do with power, as things tend to be, but overal people nowadays are taking books from the past way to seriously. Lighten up guys, I'm sure 'God' doesn't really want you to be wasting the life he gave you by forcing you like cattle to prayer, give your monies away to guys in odd shaped hats so they can buy more gold candle hodlers and a new mosiac and then spend the rest of your life in fear that you're going to hell. Enjoy what you got.

As a hardline atheist and son of a hardline Socialist, I imagine that most religions were created as tools to control the lower classes. Also I would like to point out that it is a goddamn shame that Star Wars was not written during the copper age. It's always depressing to think about what might have been. Like if George Lucas had stayed away from the director's seat. Boy, what might have been. And I agree, religion has been used frequently in the past to gain control. I'm almost positive that Constantine used Christianity to unite his empire (some say that during this period is when the cross became a part of Christian culture). King Henry VIII switched the country's religion so he could get a divorce. If you look at the Vatican, it's practically theocratic and millions of Catholics across the world follow the Pope's every word. And I also agree with Zars. Many religions place too much emphasis on death and the afterlife, which is another reason I'm hard-pressed to agree with them. They say, continuously, that life is ultimately meaningless in comparison to heaven, which is why you have so many suicide bombers overseas, cause they honestly think they're getting the better end of the deal. It's like Alan Watts said: It's silly to place so much emphasis on the end. Books would be one word and people would go to symphonies just to see the final chord.

If they're going to get a better deal in the after life why not let us continue sinning and not believing in God because we'll all just go to hell anyway. It makes terrorism seem like mindless stupidity after the fact it is mindless stupidity.
Anyone seen the documentary this evening on Channel 4 about Race and IQ? It was very interesting. It came on after the documentary about breakfast cereals and health. Also very interesting.

It was a tad on the biasis side for a logn while. Daniel adn I were getting a bit annoyed at the presenter especially when he kept making underhanded remarks that insinuated some of the white scientists that he interviewed were racist when all they said was what some test scores said and according to all there test scores white people aren't even at the top of the leagues so how are they being racist if they're saying they aren't as intellgent as the East asians, but he kept convienantly ignoring them talking about the east asians and any other race he just wanted to make it all Black versus white. It was really strongly pushed from his side to make it about racism but he did calm down at some points and it was interesting hearing all the psychologists, educators and scientists views. I definitely suggest it as a watch on channel4.com
Also, I was just wanting some randomers blogging because I'm bored and I cam across this and I listened quietly but my jaw yet kept dropping. I really want to send this women some books! Books on history mostly!
I liked this response to the women above. She actually bothered to use research.
..... is this guy serious? He must be one of these warped view peopel that are told via word of mouth fucktardary what feminism is, confuse it witht he lesbian feminsit movement then begin talking agaisnt Feminism without actually doing real research on it. I've emt some really messed up people who have leapt into a hate match because I've said I'm a feminist and its so hard to calm them down soemtimes then you have to reeducate them and they still seem so very confused. Feminism, as in the feminist offical group is about the protection and equailty of everybodies rights. A feminist will stand up for a man's rights if he is not treated equally by women. You can't have equality if men don't have equality also. Thats the basic necessity of feminism. The lesbian feminist group has a completely different agenda. They're a group of women, that are actually opposed by feminists, who believe that women should BE men. They have very radical views, bad attitudes and ruin the rights of a women. Grrr... I have a few papers I wrote on feminism. Maybe I should just fidn them and post them or something. I could talk about his subject for hours. Feminism really is needed. 3rd wave feminism recieved such a backlash from the 90's it actually sent women's rights backwards. Then from the media and cultural manipulation that occured in the 90's we now have women acting, whose midns were moulded during this time, acting like morons and believing this hate campaign agaisnt feminism and demoting the reputation of women everywhere. I honestly find the way women are treated and the way they act today utterly disgusting. We're slaves and we don't even know it. Every aspect of our lives is controlled and pulled under rigorous scrutiny. Sexism is as rampant as it was in the 50's. Look at the work place. Look at the music industry. Go to your local shops and buy a magazine! Then go down to your local courthouse and watch some trials. We still don't have equal rights in a court of law!

I can vaguely see the lady's point about women being aggessively encouraged to work... but goddamn. She starts off with that point, then spends three minutes descending into absolute gibberish. She really has no idea what she's talking about. Seems to believe women are not opressed in America.
It's like Mister Burns and the sideburns. I have no idea what she thinks feminism is. Silly, silly woman.
She also has another video named 'Chivalry is dead, women killed it'.

Back to religion, here is an inspiring (if slightly pompous) response to an insanely complex question about atheism. It's very much 'Atheism is awesome rawwrr' but I like it.
And here is one which I wholly agree with and love - nothing to do with religion or feminism but there was a link next to the last video. Fry's thoughts on the modern use of the words 'respect' and 'offence'.

I'm sighign at the moment. Watched that documentary on channel 4 'the myth about white beauty'. This first episode of the series was ... well... I'm not sure how to say it. Negative against white people for no reason. I'm just going to quote daniel on soem of his comments.
Documentary: "She wants to have a breast reduction so she can have breasts like a white women." Daniel: "No, she doesn't want her back to hurt and wishes she could buy clothes that fit." Documentary: "I'm an Iranian man and I'm very hairy. I just want to be hairless like white people." Daniel: "You should see my arse mate. Its hairier than your back by a long mile." Documentary: "I just want to have tits like the white woman." Daniel: "Ok, I have bigger breasts than her. Thats not wanting to be a white woman thats wanting to be feminine." Documentary: "He believes going through surgery to make his legs logner will make him tall like a white man and more sucessful in life." Daniel: "yeah, because the NBA is full of tall white men."
The next episode actually looks like it will be looking at REAL people trying to change there race to a white person rather than people of another race just wanting some normaility.
_______________
I just watched the stephen fry video's. I love Stephen Fry. He's a fantastic speaker that can talk about a subject without directly insulting people.

Funny rebuttals by Daniel there.
Yes Fry's eloquence (and staggering intelligence) are a treat to witness. I'm very fond of him. I must read his novels someday.
