Every Goddamn excuse the CEOs spout about PC Gaming is "PIRACY PIRACY PIRACY BLARGH"
The developer gets money from whatever company owns it, if it's self owned (for example Crytek is not, its products are distributed by EA) then it might make money from the individual sales, however, the people that work at the development house itself are paid with a PAYCHECK, and the money they get to make the game come from the PUBLISHER. I hate it when they make it sound like a pirate is directly hurting the developer, he's not, if anything it's hurting the distributor, who isn't getting harmed much at all because the stores already payed to stock their product. The only discernible effect piracy has is that it leaves more copies on the shelf, which means the distributor has less shelf space to sell out to.
Piracy is nothing more than a "boogie man" that developers point to when the Publisher's CEO comes down on their ass for poor Point-of-sale performance. They refer to piracy as "theoretical dollars lost". Yes, theoretical because if you think about it, who's to say the vast majority of those pirates were going to buy your game anyway?
Piracy is simply the scapegoat, the issue is almost puny compared to the losses gaming companies suffer from merely functioning.
Piracy has such a little effect on the market. It's almost negligent.

If they really want to stop piracy they should sell at reasonable prices. When a game comes out and costs £50 there is something majority wrong. You can't blame that price on piracy because its the cause of piracy. Companies are to greedy and it shows.
Look at the music industry. I did a paper on this last year so I do know what I'm talking about with this one. The music industry pays roughly £1.75 for a CD. The manufacturing, distributing and price of the music. An Album is roughly £9 now a days. Thats £7.25 PROFIT! I'd much rather go and buy singles from Itunes anyway. They pack there albms out with a lot of doozies I'll never listen to, apart form the odd great album of course. Anyway the music industry actually earns most of its actual profit from memorabilia and tours. Thats where the money is and thats why theres been massive discussions under the table about making albums free to the public. Some bands have already done that but the bosses want to hold onto that huge profit they're getting from albums as well.
You are really not hurting the artist when you download a couple of his songs. He gets his money from touring. Its always been that way.

And now for a clever, interesting and challenging opinion on this morally and intellectually complex issue, from me.

However, upon being sober I would come back to the conclusion it is an awful awful awful etc... show and turn over to watch Hoobs. Now Hoobs... thats a show I can respect! It has Tiddly peeps. lol

I think piracy can be a problem to a game company in SOME instances. A lot of companies are playing the piracy card to account for poor sales, but it's not on account of that: it's because your game sucked!
We're getting to a point where developers are so eager to cover their own asses, that players who actually bought the game are getting told how many times they can INSTALL their own game! That is insane, when a company has a say in how you can use the product that you purchased.
Stardock Games: that company's gonna go places. Sins of a Solar Empire was an amazing game, and they pulled so many restrictions back so that people who bought the game could actually play with their friends, since the game allowed for it to be copied onto multiple computers.
When console gamers want to play with friends, they buy one copy and invite friends over. If the friends like it, more copies get bought. The same must be said for the PC market. When people buy these games, they want to be able to have control and have the opportunity to play with friends. Piracy, as Cali said, is just the scapegoat.

Have you ever tried watching either with a hangover? I'd take Hoobs every time!

Hoobs just make my head ache even more, mate. Lazy Town makes me very happy.
Wait... how can we cheer up Ivor's whatnow?!
Anyway. The best TV in the world when you're not at your best is Dora the Explorer. You have an adventure, you learn a little Spanish, you solve extremely easy problems by yelling at the TV and for this, you're constantly congratulated and thanked. It's a wonderful thing to get you back on your feet.

WAT. The only children's TV programme is Stoppit and Tidyup. It's narrated by Terry Wogan!

Also, I'm an avid fan of Big Cook, Little Cook.
