Ashley is a fascinating, well-written and beautifully-acted character. I like her, but I don't like to follow her romance path - simply because of her cruelty to Liara ('at least she looks like a woman!') and her attitudes toward aliens in general ('make nice with the bug eyed monsters').
I've debated this subject at length, and I still say she is racist. It makes her a better character and Mass Effect a better-written game, but it makes it hard to like her on a personal level (but not impossible) and means my Shepard is usually a woman.
As for her religion - I love that they included this in the game. In sci-fi set in the future, atheism always seems to have completely taken over. I'm an atheist, but the idea still makes me nervous. Religious people in the future are either non-existant or they're crazy fanatics. So it's good to see that in Mass Effect's world, ancient beliefs haven't been wiped out by science.

Ehhhhh, I never had a thing for Ashley. I always left her behind to guard the ship. And I haven't rescued her once from the Nuke. I would never let Carth die.
I will say that when she mentioned that she believed in God, I was sorta taken aback. I had never heard a video game character want to have a conversation about metaphysical beliefs before. It was kinda shallow to me, though. Like Bioware stuck it in there, but didn't want to push it much farther.
"You don't mind that I believe in God, do ya, Shepard?"
"Erm...no?"
"Well, glad we got that out of the way. How was your day?"
I'm glad that they put a character in the game that believes in God, it was a real change of pace from yer typical sci-fi game, as you said, but is she the only one in the galaxy who has these beliefs? For that matter, I would have liked to see the other party members talk about their beliefs: Garrus in particular.
All I'm saying is...in Fallout 3, you could go to church. >=D
But, my favorite character would have to be Garrus. Mostly, I loved the conflict with morality and ethics that he has all through the game, and I loved how your were able to help him exact revenge/come to peace with his past. He was the only character that I felt I had control over in a way; in a KotOR 2 kind of way. And I liked that. It made his character development more dynamic.
I effing hated that he was in the cargo hold, though, and I had to ride that goddamn time-vampire of an elevator to progress his story. ><

The only problem I have with Garrus is his voice... Goodness me, it sounded with pure awesome but unfortunately it made a lot fan girls going ga-ga over him because of it. >.< Don't get me wrong I really like him... but not in that kind of way. I've agree about Garrus' conflicted morality, it's interesting but I've kinda wished that BioWare would flesh out his character more or reveal it a bit more... I can't help but have this feeling about something that he's being... a bit too reserved. Also yeah, the Normandy's elevator sucks. Fortunately I've play the PC version so it's not much of a problem nowdays as it slid down a lot faster than the xbox version

I much preferred Nihlus's voice over Garrus. *sigh* His markings were cooler, too. It's such a shame, what happens to him...

I love Garrus' voice. Not in that way - he was part reptile - but I liked the voice a lot. Nihilus was indeed a lot cooler, but I preferred to have the less secure, more interesting character on my team.

I've still didn't get it why BioWare dropped the bridge off him with the way they worked out his background in greater detail.
I mean usually characters with less details in their backstory usually die off, not for those who have been fleshed out in their past like Nihlus

Those guys just love putting good backstories on everything. Plus, it's more dramatic and surprising when he dies that way.

Guess so, you're right about it.
Besides, typical of bioWare, who loves putting their life stories before shoving them down in the coffin.
EDIT: After re-reading Mock Effect, I hate to admit but the way you portray Tali is so true to the bone. That's how I've felt of here everytime I have to speak to her because of the XP. >.>

Ya I voted for Garrus as my favorite. He's cool and I did like the conflict with morality thing too. He was really the only person's morality that you could effect unless you turn Kaidan Renegade or Ashley Paragon. With the other you can only get them to like or dislike you and for Liara as a romance but no real morality change.

I kinda like Tali nowadays. I just find her stories very dull, after the first time.

Don't get me wrong, I like Tali but... having to hear her druge on about her life story does get into my nerves sometimes.
But I have to admit she has this cute teen booper persona
