I think what's really getting me about it is how out-and-out average it is, and how safe Ubisoft have played it. There's nothing this game does that GTA, Far Cry 3 or Black Flag doesn't do better.
Sadly, for the most part, gotta agree.
The game is nothing like the promos suggested it could be, in terms of gameplay, graphics or story.
Hacking basically amounts to using cameras, moving lifts and a couple of amusing tricks that lose their appeal after you've done them for ten hours.
It's another boring open-world, with the same sort of missions to complete and collectables to run down.
Another problem I had with it, as well as the formula of modern open world games. There's a whole lotta everything that sorta boils down to a whole lotta nothing.
The story is a generic as fuck revenge/family protection plot and Aiden is a boring and hypocritical douchebag. I was hoping it would focus more on ctOS and fighting it's influence, and the unfair level of power and knowledge it gives Blume and Aiden over people, with some He Who Fights Monsters kind of shit, but nope. Revenge.
Though I agree, it's still a pretty well executed revenge story (at least so far). Aiden is indeed taken from the generic assembly line of gruff voiced, world weary cracker protagonists, but I feel his hypocrisy is a good flaw. Maybe it's not intentional, but the whole vigilante phenomenon that Death Wish and Dirty Harry dished out was asking to be dissected.
But yeah, still coulda been more of a "He who fights monsters" aspect, methinks.
The game forces you into killing too often. I've found I have more fun using stealth and non-lethal takedowns, but then story missions force me to mow down scores of gangbangers.
As for stealth, I fucking loved the shit out of the suppressed M1911 pistol. It made gang hideout missions easier than they should have been, and well, that's kinda the point.
Just like Assassin's Creed, the multiplayer is dragged down by an awful fanbase who won't play it properly.
In what way? Haven't run into too much trouble so far.
And the music on the radio is crap. It's all too hipster-y. I can just imagine some French Canadian Creative Director asshole listening to it and going, "Oh yes, this weel really invest de playerr in Aiden's journee!". There isn't even any Pop. Are the people of Chicago too good for Pop music?
Dude, the soundtrack is loaded with shitty pop-punk songs, and stuff that fuckfaced skater kids from Indiana would listen to... if it were 2004. (God I slam the fucking 'N' key every time "COONFIDENTIAL LYYIIIING" comes on).
Also, what does the word "Hipster" even mean anymore? Good Gad. What's your definition of pop anyway, homeslice? You talkin' 80's pop like The Human League, Tears For Fears, and Public Image Ltd. or just modern pop or pop in general?
Sadly most of the good songs are unlocked after doing story missions (Wu Tang, Ministry, and all that) And seriously, even though the soundtrack is pretty hit or miss, it has freaking Chicago! Not only is that appropriate, but that band is fucking great in the chill-ass motherfucker 60's vibe.
And hanging over all that is the fact Ubisoft want Watch Dogs to be their next Assassin's Creed. Paint-by-numbers and a release pushed out annually, and to hell with making a truly special game. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced Watch Dogs 2: Watch Harder at E3 next week at this point.
I really didn't like the original Assassin's Creed. I thought it was an extreme disappointment with a couple of redeeming qualities. AC2, while having a stupid "good vs evil" plot, was an improvement in every way. I hope Watch_Dogs 2 is much of the same.
Watch Dogs was meant to be a real "Next Gen" game, so it's depressing to me to see it all too content with wallowing in the shitpile that is modern gaming.
:-(
I will admit it does have it's moments, like when I pick out my target in a heavily guarded area, kill the city's power, KO him and leave before the lights come back. Or escaping the police on the roof of a hijacked train. Or that time I stole from a paedophile's bank account. But they're few and far between.
Heh, aight.
Also, I keep forgetting that "blackout" exists and how useful it can be.
