An SMG isn't a really a rifle. It's a shoulder-fired arm that uses pistol ammo.
Amyways, I picked the sniper rifle and pistol. The pistol is pretty versatile at close to mid range and the sniper rifle has its obvious use.

I was speaking in terms of SMGs in real life. Uzis and MP5s use 9mm ammo, old Thompsons used .45 ACP, and so on.

Shotgun, if only because i can say this while using it! I'd much prefer the M41A Pulse Rifle in 10mm exploding-tipped, caseless with an over-under 30mm pump action grenade launcher. ;D

For me it's this loadout:
Phalanx Heavy Pistol (Yeah I bought that DLC. I still feel dirty, but I don't regret that the Phalanx = easy mode) Viper Sniper Rifle Tempest SMG Mattock Heavy Rifle (That damned DLC again)
I always picked Infiltrator and picked assault rifles as my special talent weapon.

Depends which class I'm on.
For Infiltrator, I like the Widow Sniper better. Hit's like a fricken tank and it's one of those guns that helped me survive in my insanity run.
For adept, unfortunately I have to pick the Mantis riffle, it's close enough to be the poor man's Widow. (My adept went for the sniper talent, due to being a space squishy wizard.)
And for Vangaurd... It's that Geth Shotgun. Yes I know it's from the DLC but it's worth it when it has a decent damage output, faster and realiable DPS then say the krogan shotgun. Oh and has that... pretty plasmas effect.

My Infiltrator uses
Widow Sniper Rifle as the primary arm Phalanx Heavy pistol Whatever the name of the SMG you get from Kasumi's quest
My Vanguard uses
Geth Shotgun Phalanx Heavy Pistol The SMG from Kasumi's quest The Mattock Heavy rifle for extra training
I never play the other classes.

The pistol with 6 bullets that goes "POW! POW! POW! POW! POW! POW!"

The pistol with 6 bullets that goes "POW! POW! POW! POW! POW! POW!" And causing a hanging chemical container to fall and explode, causing the body of an Eclipse merc to fly past his Salarian counterpart, resulting in a "Mother of God" expression from the Salarian? ;D I actually prefer the lower-powered pistol. Faster follow-up shots and higher ammo capacity.

I like any sniper rifle (but not that crazy laser one from ME2) and the Locust (I think it was called) submachine gun, from Kasumi's quest.
Generally on Mass Effect my thing is sniping and sending the other two in to bash skulls and split wigs, as I like to put it. In the second game there's an issue there since I'm by far the most armoured person there and I'm the one hiding behind oddly-shaped rocks.

I really do like the Collector beam too, though. There's something gleefuly silly about that one. It's by far my favourite heavy weapon.

Truthfully, I'd like to see the SMGs and Assault Rifles have selectors so we can go between semi-auto and full auto. It would make them more versatile.

Yeah, very good idea. I'd love that.

It should be a simple matter. Games like Rainbow 6 and the new Medal of Honor have that ability.
