Back on topic, yes, I believe that civilians have the right to bear arms and defend themselves from harm. But as long as they can hold responsibility for their actions and learn the rules of gun safety. But banning gun sales won't help decrease gun crime rates.

Agreed, but you arrived a bit late there, Mr. Ronnoc. The matter has been discussed and concluded tenfold even before the thread began.
Now it's time for us to move onto other firearm related topics. Such as whether or not bodacious babes in Bikini's driving lawnmowers with an MP5 submachinegun in their free hands is hot or not.

Good lord, that's awful... that poor girl... But, if she had had a gun, it still likely would have gone the same way - he had his gun trained on her before she could react, and if she had reached for a gun he would have shot her. Also, she apparently had access to a panic button that she didn't - or couldn't - press. It really sucks, but sometimes no matter how prepared a person is, they can still get hurt or killed by someone crazier and more prepared for evil. As for the whole gun debate, I am torn on that - I'm not anti-gun so much as anti-asshole. I don't mind if good, responsible people have guns and know how to use them and use them safely. What I don't like is robbers and rapists and home invaders getting guns and using them to bring pain and torture to innocent people. But I am also aware that when a person goes to buy a gun through legal channels, generally they're the good ones - and it's the ones who obtain their guns through smuggling / other illegal means that tend to be the misusers of guns. So, sad to say, there really seems to be no way to differentiate. Back to my original point though - that poor girl, I hope that monster gets punished properly for what he did to her. Lily, that guy wound up committing suicide later on, so it's up to whatever hell he's in to dish out his punishment. Personally, I'm hoping he runs afoul the Cenobites. Also, if she had a gun available, she could have stood a better chance or protecting herself; it would have given her the option of fighting back more effectively than she had by being unarmed. She may well could have died by being shot, but the chance exists that she could have gotten lucky and turned the tables on her attacker. Even though she had a panic button available, the police would have been minutes away when she needs help right at that moment. It doesn't do much good to Monday morning quarterback that case, though.

Also, if she had a gun available, she could have stood a better chance or protecting herself; it would have given her the option of fighting back more effectively than she had by being unarmed. Yeah... the second she reaches for the gun, he shoots her in the face with the gun he already had pointed at her. That was what I was saying. Even if she had a gun on her, would she have had time to reach it, before he fired the weapon he already had aimed? Anyway, regardless of whether or not she'd have been better off with or without a gun, it's still a tragic thing that happened to her. And as I have previously stated, I am neither pro-gun nor anti-gun - I am neutral on that issue. I also prefer not to get into gun debates (or any debates on this forum, to be honest - I tend to get upset when my very valid points are ignored or misunderstood, and then get accused of being too emotional to be taken seriously, so I've decided to avoid debates). I only replied to that particular post because the article about that poor girl hit me hard... So I am backing off before this gets heated in any way.

*resurrects this thread*
A month after the shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, the US President Barack Obama has signed 23 executive actions on gun control and asks Congress to pass gun-control laws, specifically on stronger background checks, restoring the ban on magazine capacities with more than ten rounds, and a ban on military-style assault weapons.
The question I have to ask is: will this policy work? If so, how?
