So, this actually isn't really a political thing, but something kind of hilarious happened yesterday that related to something in the fanfic world and something someone did that was absolutely a stupid idea.
Okay, so there's this one plagiarist that I got especially involved with because he wouldn't shut up, right? Well... it's a long story, but it's essentially "someone plagiarized an entire fic, threw out excuses when he got called out on it by me and a couple of other people, kept on throwing them out and doing the plagiarism even when he was told why it was a problem, tried to say it was accidental, and things got heated when he was repeatedly told and he kept on making excuses, and now he's calling me a troll because he doesn't understand how trolling actually works."
Well, I'm not kidding about the last part. He was so mad about me getting on his case about his plagiarism and me calling him out on it at every opportunity through all the lame excuses he gave, that after he discovered a forum post I made about the plagiarism warning people about it (that, I might add, was made back in July before he had deleted it himself), he ran over to a Facebook group and outed his real identity while being all "BLAH BLAH BLAH HERR WOZZECK'S A TROLL", and then linking to the thread I created.
Hilariously, he hasn't posted in the last twenty-four hours. Likely, it's a combination of the fact that nobody in the group took his side once he admitted he had actually done the plagiarism (which I imagine he was expecting people to do, but hey), and then the fact that I commented saying "oh hello there, sir, I now know who you are IRL, thanks for the tip!"
It was actually kind of sad that he was stupid enough to believe that people would actually take his side once he told people that he had plagiarized someone. Some people, man...

You cannot fix stupid, even with duct tape. That said, a 2x4 (or Alma in your case) does aid in numbing it.

I imagine so. I wonder how he's gonna complain about it to the poor sods on fanfiction.net who think he's actually a good writer.
...
Speaking of which, can you believe that one of those poor sods who thinks he's actually a good writer tried to argue with me that "it's not plagiarism if the original is not protected by copyright"? That was a fun conversation...

You seemed to be taking fanfiction way too seriously. Anyway... I wish the above comic was simply taking the piss, but it's actually based on a real event. Of course this Texas we are talking about. If we are truly in such a dark place that a school cannot handle something like this in house without a suspension then there is no place for a public school system at all. maybe that is what some people are after. this shit is pathetic. Edit: Not mentioned in the article, the boy was also suspended for bringing a child's book about pregnancy to school (sex ed is the devils work, BEGONE DEMON CHILD!!) and for referring to an African American classmate as "black." I don't know if this school board is really this stunned or if it's because this family just moved in and they "don't appreciate their type around here." I read on Cracked that it wasn't the case. The kid wanted to do a pretty dangerous ring trick that involves choking someone. But I'm having trouble finding that article the story was part of. If anyone could find it, kiddos to you!

Cracked is hardly a definitive source on anything. They are just as filled with unfounded opinion as anyone else. Now lemme see if this other side of the story exists... If there is another side of the story, I can't find it. Nor can I find this Cracked op-ed. Not one source indicated that this was anything other than what I referenced which is the kid said he would make his friend disappear with the ring and it was treated as a legitimate threat rather than make believe. the news s also old enough that the majority of the articles that are still turning up are worded and clearly sourced from the same origin. so that's all I got. Edit Found both the Cracked piece and it's source material. The guys at Cracked are still taking things out of context (pack of politically biased bullshitters that they are but they can get away with that on a "humor site") but it does make things look a little better for the school. The kid is a hobbyist magician. He had a set of rings from a magic supply shop that he got around the time of seeing the movie and had a trick involving them. He did not want to show the trick off multiple times though so after one of his mates razzed on him he told "another student that he was going to put his rings around his neck and hope he died." he's nine. Believe it or not, fully understanding death at that age is not as common as you might think. The school still overreacted like with the hand gesture bang bang thing. this is the kind of shit that should be treated as a teachable moment, not a punishment. I stand by my assertion that educators are batshit insane. Frankly the source piece is downright confused about the whole thing and is still talking about a kid being disappeared toward the end. www.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-boy-feels-bad-magic-ring-suspension-article-1.2106901

And that is why I don't feel comfortable posting here.

Eh?
I'm not attacking you. I am however giving a different perspective on the same material here. I'm glad you found that update as it sheds light on the situation but I still feel that the school completely overreacted. And even the non humour site source seems very confused and screwed up so in all likelihood we will never know everything. That's as it likely should be though.

You seemed to be taking fanfiction way too seriously. And why not, exactly? Why a video instead of just typing it down? I always see you take things from fanfic authors personally. It even borders on obsession.

Oh, so do you want me to get catty with you? 'Cause I'm willing to go there while pointing out how ironic it is that you of all people think you have any right to tell me I'm taking fanfiction too seriously.

I think we have all had our go at each other for the time being. Though I do find a discussion on the definition of plagiarism meaningful in a writers forum, I will thank everyone for not having direct attacks at each other.
