Back on topic - I've been thinking about writing LGBT characters recently, and maybe I owe people apologies for when I've said it shouldn't be an issue. Especially you, Tillian - I was really rude to you earlier on this thread. I was thinking about this because I recently wrote a story where the main character happened to be a lesbian, and when I showed it to people they all said, "Why is she such a stereotype?" And I realised that the short-haired, aggressive, confident, angry, dumpy character I'd created was a huge stereotype. I mean think the character worked, and I don't intend to change her much, but if I had read this short story and anyone but me had written it I'd think it was legit homophobic. Not sure how to write her now. Her sexuality has very little to do with anything so I could just make her straight, but.... I dunno, that seems like taking the easy way out. Put her in a very simplistic "video game" rather than a story. Then watch as, far from criticizing you, everyone showers you with so many GOTY awards you can walk up the pile and climb in your upstairs window from the top of it.

The great thing about this forum is that we always know what Glow feels very strongly about.

The great thing about this forum is that we always know what Glow feels very strongly about. What can I say? I can just about tolerate things I don't like existing, but when those things are praised? Too far. I saw a preview of Gone Home mention that unlike Minerva's Den, the team's previous project, there were no homicidal robots or laser guns here. They meant it as a positive. It's when I realised video games were dead.

Maybe if you were a big wheel in the gaming industry like I am, you'd understand.

/sigh.
I'm not going to say much that will help, but know this. The LGBT group are quite sensitive with the stereotypes and mismanaged characters than you would think, hence this is why I put up this thread in the first place. If it was easy, this thread wouldn't even exist.
Even though we didn't mean to offend groups while writing, it easy to make those mistakes, especially on a subconscious level. My advice, go and hangout with those people and whatever you do, be careful in the questions you ask. They get a bit twitchy whenever someone asked the very sensitive subjects about their sexuality...
