I thought it might be time to bring this thread out of retirement ;D and post this lovely gem - Aerecura, you might like this... and any other RENT-heads out there... this is awesome!
Peter Hollens (the guy who did the acapella Skyrim song with Lindsey Stirling) and his wife Evynne doing "Seasons of Love" from RENT...
And they also did an acapella cover of "The Prayer" - and I can't believe how amazing they are.

I saw Les Mis (The 25th anniversary concert thing) for the first time a couple of days ago. My mind was actually, literally, blown by how much I enjoyed it.

Oh that was the newer one. Did you by any chance see the 10 year one. That had Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and a lot of the original cast. I'm sure the newer blood did fine (the Jonas Brother who sang Marius was surprisingly good) but the 10 year cast was amazing.

OK.
WOW, Alfie Boe just nailed it. He sounds just as good to me as Colm Wilkinson did.
It will take a few listens for me to see if it's even possible to pick a favorite. It might be Colm by a whisker but only because I seriously doubt anyone knows the role like him.

I'm not the mad about the 25h Anniversary version, but that is 90% because of the Jonas brother playing Marius, who simply doesn't have the voice. It's embarassing.
Alfie Boe was pretty damn good! And he seems like a really nice guy too.

Let me be clear. Micheal Ball's rendition of Marius was amazing and likely never to be topped. That said, Nick Jonas was far better in the role than I had any reason to expect. His voice lacks the power but he kinda rolled with it to give a different version of the same guy. Not nearly as much raw talent as Ball has to be sure but he has more chops than I previously gave him credit for.
Edit: I can't believe I am actually stepping up to bat for a Jonas brother but I won't trash his performance simply because of his Disney pop music.

I was definitely close to tears over Bring Him Home. I really liked Javert, as well. The Confrontation was amazing.
The Jonas brother wasn't that bad, he was probably the weakest of the cast, though.
I also thought Matt Lucas was pretty funny, even though I don't particularly like him normally.

I actually hated the 25th Javert as well as Nick Jonas. They just can't hit the notes. Jonas' face in particular is always scrunched up in discomfort as he tries to sing competently.

The 25th Javert seemed off to me, the little I saw of him. Wrong, voice, wrong inflection, wrong expression, wrong, wrong ,wrong, wrong.

My two favorite musicals are Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Mainly because those are the only two I've seen in person.

Agreed, Meironmaiden! I love CATS and Phantom of the Opera; my parents took me to see both of those when I was quite a bit younger - as well as The Lion King - we went to see Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King in Toronto, and we saw CATS here in Halifax... Phantom was the first musical I ever saw and I was hooked ever since. As for the Les Miserables discussion, I am immensely excited to see the movie version in the New Year, the one with Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne and Russell Crowe... But I will say, in the 10th Anniversary Concert, I think the good people in that cast cannot be beat - Colm Wilkinson as Valjean, and Michael Ball as Marius, as well as Lea Salonga as Eponine and Ruthie Henshall as Fantine; all of them make me cry rivers of tears for their heartbreaking emotional singing. They are simply amazing.

At the risk of taking heat... RENT is annoying as hell to me. Seems the premise is "I'm a crack whore with AIDS, but that doesn't matter because I LOOOOVE you...".
Sorry for the crude analogy, but that's what I took away. Oh, and "all businesses are evil and out to crush artists". Yes, I'm conservative in that regard, but if one relies on art to pay the bills, I feel that they should realize that money isn't likely to be rolling in and plan accordingly: living in Manhattan doesn't show that kind of planning, in my opinion.
And before you all start dog piling on me, I'm a musican hopeful with my guitar playing so I know the artistic drive to create, buou.t I also make sure I have a means to put food on the table (military in my case) before spending time on my art.
Caveat: and I don't intend to disrepect anyone on here, especially Till. This mini-rant isn't aimed at you, so I apologize in advance if I hit a nerve by accident.

I wasn't really trolling, honestly. We genuinely do disagree on everything. But that said, I really like Phantom and Cats.
