A/N: I own nothing. Mass Effect belongs to BioWare. The Longest Day belongs to Cornelius Ryan and 20th Century Fox.
While the events of Mass Effect 2 are confirmed to be set in the year 2185, there’s no clear data on when they take place within the year. To make the fic work, I’m assuming that they happened over the course of a few months, from March to May.
Spoilers for the game, as well as Lair of the Shadow Broker. Warning for Fem!Shep/Liara, but nothing objectionable unless you just can’t stand the pairing.
Commander Kaya Shepard
She had wanted to do it on the original Normandy, but never got the chance. Now, Shepard had the opportunity to carry on one of the lesser-known traditions of the Alliance military.
All Alliance frigates were named after major historical battles. And, unsurprisingly, any battle that was notable enough to get a frigate named after it probably had at least one decent movie about it. The ensuing tradition was to show said movie on the anniversary of the battle.
The tradition went back about 20 years or so, supposedly started aboard the Iwo Jima with Letters from Iwo Jima (2006). It had been mostly restricted to frigates, as the names of other Alliance ships didn’t lend themselves as well to films. Cruisers were named after cities, and most cities didn’t have an iconic film about them. The same problem existed on dreadnoughts, which were named after mountains, although Shepard had fond memories of watching Top of the World (2044) while stationed aboard the Everest. There had been an attempt to use biopics on carriers, which were named after famous people, but biopics didn’t do as well among soldiers as war movies.
But the tradition was strong on frigates. According to Engineer Adams, the Normandy had originally been slated to be named the Trenton, but they changed it after discovering that nobody had actually made a decent film about the Battle of Trenton. Shepard wasn’t sure if Adams had been joking, but if he was serious, she was glad. Because there was a very good film about the Battle of Normandy.
