See, I think America has a lot in common historically with Australia (from what I know). We seem to worship our outlaws and gunslingers, as well, despite their questionable acts. Take Mountain Man Hugh Glass, for example. Mauled by a bear and left for dead by his two companions. He dragged himself over 200 miles, managed to build himself a raft, and float down to the next town so he could get revenge on the two who left him. And John "Liver-Eating" Johnson, who waged war on the Crow Indians for two decades, killing around 300 of them solo, 20 of them being at once. There's a relatively tame account of his life, Jeremiah Johnson, which is a great freaking movie in its own right. Anyway, yeah. Not men who should rightly be called heroes or worshiped, but they are. =/

Take a look at Billy the Kid, Butch Cassidy, etc.. They were villains back in the day and get romanticized like crazy now. So yeah, we do it too, but only with those west of the Mississippi.

Britain has a bit of this, too - Dick Turpin the famous highwayman, Carribean pirates and Robin Hood who was probably an imaginary character but he was originally a villain in the story.
And then there's Vinnie Jones, who was a bullyish, cheating footballer with no charisma, and yet we gave him a Hollywood acting career.

Robin Hood was based on a variety of characters but probably was indeed imaginary. The closest case would be displaced English Lords after William the Conqueror's Norman takeover.

Canada has that one guy who forgot to return the pen he borrowed at the post office. There's a statue of him writing an apologetic note in Vancouver.

- What are you doing?
- I'm wishing cancer upon you!
- Ugh, no, I don't want cancer!

I'm having an MST3K marathon courtesy of Netflix's streaming movies today.
"Deep hurting! DEEP HURTING!"
I'm off to watch a half hour of rock climbing now (courtesy of that show).

"....I took life much too seriously. When you take life too seriously you start to wonder what the point of it all is. When you wonder what the point is in life, you fall into a trap of thinking there is one. When you think there is a point, you finally realize there is no point. And what point is there in living like that? Nowadays I skip the search for a point and find, instead, the punch lines."
