Today I've been nostalgic for old games I loved as a kid, and I was reminded of the sheer brilliance that is the Amiga theme music for Lotus Turbo Challenge 2...
Seriously. Best music ever recorded? Yes. I listened to it on the intro/options screens of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2. Me and my brother would listen to the whole damn thing, needlessly tweaking the options so that we could hear it all. Since then, this song has never been far from my mind. It will never leave, just like Duck Tales.
The 'guitar solo' bit is the best bit.

So - does anyone else have any highlights for truly great music from games, past of present? I can think of a ton for future posts.

EDIT: Dude!

Oh, I think one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time was for Final Fantasy VII. It's not often that you can hear a piece of music from a 30 hour (or more) adventure and remember exactly what you were doing when you heard it...or maybe you can. I don't know, I'm not a doctor.
To get less obligatory (if I didn't use FF7, then someone else would have!) some of my favorite classics were from Star Fox and F-Zero:
And of course, World of Warcraft has a marvelous soundtrack as well, that I listen to often (not always in game ><):

If we're talking about games from the past soundtracks then the first one that comes to my mind is Daytona USA for the Sega Saturn. Though I never owned a sega saturn I used to play this at the arcade as a kid all the time mostly because I loved the music oh and it wasn't one of those chair to screen ones it was a car! You ahd to sit in a car to play it! Fucking awesome as a 6 year old. It has one of those soundtracks you just sing along to whilst driving. lol I've been known to break out into "Daeee-tona!!!" when playing PGR4. lol
This is the version I often heard.
This is the PC/Saturn version thats not synthed.
Synth version from the arcade.
PC/Saturn version
Seriously that game had so many kicking tunes I'd have to take over this entire thread to post them so youtube it. lol
edit
I've randomly come across the original song. Not the game version the actual album song! It actually sounds better with lyrics.

ok now this I used to play at home all the time on the megadrive. This, streets of rage and bomberman were the only games I deemed worthy of my time during those years. lol I loved the music from Virtua Racing. I'm starting to sound like a racing gamer now aren't . Gran turismo on the PS1 was another fave of mine. They just don't make racing games as good anymore though. I really dislike Forza on the 360 and PGR4 is only good if I'm driving alone and even then I can only last 20 minutes tops before I throw the pad in frustration. Burnout paradise is a good game though. Anywho the music
This one was my fave. I used to have it turned on to this all the time.
Arcade version actually sounds pretty good.

These are all great pieces - nice ones! Never really thought of Corneria before, Knight, but - yeah!
Zars: You're right. When we were kids, those arcade machines that were like cars were incredible. I still think they're really cool.
Today I nominate every single piece of music from 'Donkey Kong Country'. This is the best one-
Next up is the (only) song that played in Metroid 2: Return of Samus
(in which Samus does not return to anywhere. Unlike the first game, in which she was returning to her homeplanet, and the third, in which she returned to that planet AGAIN. Metroid 2 even features far less backtracking than any other Metroid game - almost as if to pour salt into the wound. The wound born of lazy, cliche titles. It should have been called Metroid 2: Entirely new ground for Samus, and linear ground at that.)
And here is another tweaked, live version of a classic game theme.

omg, listening to that Donkey Kong music made me remember how angry I used to get at that game. Fighting that stupid croc on that stupid pirate ship...I was livid!
Here's a song from Halo 3. For as much as overrated as I think those games are, the production values, especially in the music, are astounding.
And, of course, KotOR!:

Good call on Halo 3. I think the hole Halo series has superb music, and very well placed in the campaigns too.
Never really thought of KotOR... I guess, to me I never got beyond "This is not John Williams' work - it's inferior" but listening to that bit without the game to distract me, I was impressed. I wish more motifs from the Williams score were included in the game, to make it feel more like Star Wars. Bastilla's Theme, I think it is, keeps neeeeearly doing the 'Force' theme music (from when Luke is looking at the twin suns? That one) but never quite does. It teased me with the Force theme.

I love certain bits of the KotOR soundtrack. I wouldn't call the whole thing stellar, but songs like the Dantooine theme, Bastila's theme, and the song from the abandoned apartment bring back so many pleasant memories that it's hard not to like them. Plus, they are rather good pieces to relax to.
Some of them, like the Endar Spire theme, I just can't stand. Brings back too many cliched and repetitive memories...of frustration. ><

"Beasts and Bumpkins"? I have never heard of the games you mention Scarin. Makes me feel mainstream and uneducated.
This is a very nice tune though.
It rather reminds me of the music from "Braid" which is also great (if slightly pretentious, like everything in that game).

The Okami sountrack not only fitted the game to a tee but they awesome.
This piece actually made me cry.
Rise up Ammy!
Also this one from Secret of Mana. That song is still stuck in my head.
There's more but I have to dig it all up again >.<

Now that is very good music.
For some reason the first one reminded me of 'Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon' on Nintendo 64.
This bit of background music always used to have a serious emotional effect on me, too. I would listen to it over and over while my character just stood there - it made me reflective! Listening back it still makes me very solemn and calm.
And Mystical Ninja had tons of other great bits of music - but it is often remembered for the unintentionally funny, bizarre and insanely catchy musical numbers.
Admit it, you just became a die hard fan of Dancin' and Lily.

I'm posting in a old thread, but my recent playthrough of Alan Wake made me realise how much I like one of the themes: Tom the Diver, without spoiling anything, it plays at some of the most emotional parts of the story, and it's very memorable. To me, it's almost, if not as good as a film's score.
And on a lighter note, the Sonic 2 Chemical Plant (the level with the purple water) music, which I spent most of childhood drowning to:

I really liked that Alan Wake song! That game has been tempting me for awhile. Hear a lot of good things. =D
Here's a song from Red Dead Redemption, from the end credits. Sad, so sad.

I've never played the Dig, though I recently discovered its music, and holy hell, I'll admit that it rivals Jerry Goldsmith's score for Alien. Such great ambiance. Not only this, but I heard that Robert "T-1000" Patrick voices the main protagonist in the game.
Sometimes I found myself playing House Harkonnen just to listen to this track. Dune 2000 was kind of a hated remake of Dune 2. Doesn't matter, since I still enjoy playing it every now and then, despite how incredibly hard it is. The composer captured the music and atmosphere of the David Lynch movie completely, channeling Toto's score and even making a track extremely reminiscent of Brian Eno's prophecy theme.
I remember playing Medal of Honor: Underground during my short lived PS1 days, and being totally surprised by the tense atmosphere of Act 1 as you fled Gestapo agents through the streets of Paris, and eventually the catacombs. Needless to say, the skulls on the wall, the Nazi's talking and barking orders amongst themselves in the deep recesses of the level, as well as the music remained one of the most tense moments in gaming for me.
Speaking of Catacombs and scary music, the previous ain't got nothing on the Diablo soundtrack's creepiness. I love the guitar tapering and riffs in this track. I ripped this song off of YouTube and modded my copy of Oblivion so I could listen to this track when I entered the dungeon areas of the game. =)
Saving the best for last, nothing makes me more nostalgic than the music of the Metroid games.

I absolutely love the Metroid music - all three of the original 2D games, but espescially the original. 'Metroid Zero Mission' has really cool re-made versions of all those songs. After playing that 'Super Mario Crossover I want to play that again for the music.
