That's how I felt when I was picking my classes today. I was like "So I'm gonna be a journo, but hey. I can be flexible like my Decker Mage from Shadowrun: HK, so I'm gonna be writer at the same time. I'm learning how to write in my journalism major anyway!"
Like that time where I have to carefully distribute my karma points in that game, I had to pick which electives I'm gonna stick for the rest of my degree, with the limited amount of slots.

I had a similar experience when it came to managing my time until recently.
My last couple years in the Air Force, I put everything into doing my job and was quickly recognized as one of the best in my squadron at what we did. But, that wasn't what the Air Force wants in a Sergeant. Instead, they want something akin to a "Modern Major General" with a focus on spending as much free time as possible doing "pretty" stuff like volunteering in the local community and doing charity work on top of our regular duties. Considering I was a) on a rotating shift which meant I was more than likely sleeping or resting when off duty and b) was directly involved in supporting combat operations, I shunned what I considered ancillary bullshit. Combine with getting burnt out from the constant pressure and lack of consistent sleep and I decided I wouldn't be doing myself any favors staying in.
