So I've seen the first episode now, and so far so good! The setting was very evocative and creepy, and I love the conceit of Hays' memory being foggy. He could be an unreliable narrator who isn't sure he's being unreliable. I enjoyed the bits where 80s Hays says something then we cut and it turns out it was the 2015 version.
The bit at the end where Hays is going off following a track, and whatshisname tells him it's too dark, and Hays says he doesn't care was classic True Detective, too.

My my my my Mahershala.
Gotta keep an eye out for bottles of baby oil on Hays' nightstand during the sex scenes.

Holy shit, that garbage collecting guy is gonna GO TO TOWN with whatever was in that bag. I hope there's a chainsaw in it.
Also, does anybody think Mahershala Ali is gonna hang dong in this?

You've gotta win that Emmy somehow. "Urkel's in True Detective? What!" - Me every week.

Didn't catch it in the credits, but it was so obvious this week was the David Milch co-written installment. The dinner scene with Hays and Amelia was so good and some of the insults in the interrogation scene were CHOICE.
Scoot McNairy is also predictably killing it. An actor as good as his name is stupid.
Also, fatass shitkickers getting vapourised: The secret sauce Season 2 was lacking?

Considering how weirdly hot Roland became in the 90s, I anticipate seeing the 70-something version of the character!

A decent five-o-clock shadow can really spice up a man, fo sho.

Man, the intro for this season has really grown on me. I particularly like the sequence where it transitions from a shot of Wayne and Amelia's faces, to Wayne alone surrounded by fire, back to Wayne's face broken up by the sky. It's just really cool and well-edited.
Also, all this old-guy makeup going on in 2015, it's basically Uncle Drew Detective.

So it's beyond a doubt Marty and Rust are going to show up sometime in the next three episodes. But how are they going to pull in Season 2?
My vote is for a post-credits scene to reveal the entire show was just a behind-the-scenes featurette on the true crime show's DVD, being watched by Ray Velcoro. The segment ends, then he throws his tequila bottle at the screen and snorts another fat line.
Also Season 4 needs a Christian Bale/Rob McElhenny-style extreme body transformation from it's star. Only thing that can top the Nutty Professor makeup from this season.

Tom Purcell goin' all secret agent near the end makes me want Michael Ironside to be in one of the following seasons.
Also, it's difficult to tell, but at the very last few seconds, was that "Sweet Dreams" era Annie Lennox behind Tom?

Ah, that'd be so tight.
There was some great acting in this one. Scoot in the interview scene and Dorff playing Roland conflicted over Tom were really good, but I was in tears watching the "Did I teach you to withhold?" scene between Old Hays and his son. Granted, emotionally unavailable men trying hard to express the feelings they truly have is my kryptonite, but Ali's acting in that scene was bloody masterful.

Not to spoil anything but very interesting to see Hoyt is Played by Michael Rooker. You don't cast an actor that awesome and well-known unless he's got some meaty stuff to do.
