So did Randy Rhoads and Buckethead uses them as his main guitars now. Les Pauls tend to be pretty thick in the neck, especially when compared to Ibanez guitars which use a very thin neck (one reason I don't like most Ibanez guitars is their thin necks, they feel flimsy to me).

Mark Knopfler does as well and he plays circles around most guitar players. Maybe not shredding per se but he has nearly unmatched tone and precision.

Agreed. I view people saying things like "you can't do X on Y guitar" as being ignorant at best. Some guitars may not be as optimum for some things (jazz guitar for thrash metal for example), but it doesn't mean it "can't" be done.
