Just finished up with some practice on my guitar. Here's the setlist I played.

I'm not going to throw one of my guitars. Too damn expensive to replace. *chucks an empty whiskey bottle instead*

I love it too, but another limitation is that John Petrucci stacked his guitars for the song. I wouldn't be able to do that without higher-quality stuff than my cell phone and trying to find a backing track is a huge pain.

I suppose... well, you do know a hell of a lot more about how guitars work than I do; I only know they sound awesome in the right hands... Still, maybe eventually we'll get to hear your work... *hint hint* By the way, what does "stacked his guitars" mean? What is stacking, relating to guitars?

Basically, he recorded different parts separately and then mixed it so they play at the same time on the track. The intro part where he's playing that lower riff and then a guitar comes in playing the same part as the opening piano? That's guitar stacking since Dream Theater only has one guitarist.

Now that you describe it I can hear in my head where it happens. Thanks for the explanation.

He also does the same with that shred riff when LaBrie sings "She softly whispered in my ear/My dear why don't you be afraid?". The other stacking part is in the solo (there's a rhythm bit going on while Petrucci's soloing).
To be honest, that song is an example I use to explain to people that if you can play a very tight rhythm (which is a must when guitar stacking, otherwise it sounds like shit due to errors adding up and fucking it all up), you can learn to be a good lead guitarist, but the converse (sloppy lead guy playing rhythm) doesn't hold up. I've had to play rhythm in bands where the lead guy was amazing when soloing (to the layman) but was too sloppy to do rhythm. Yes, I'm not very good at soloing compared to most people at my experience level, but I can play some tight rhythms and get than pant-waving-from-the-loudness feel going and still cut a fair solo which makes me more valuable than some wanna-be who can't play a bloody thing without hiding behind a wah pedal.
