Yep. It's certainly not the band I'd pick to write such a song either.

Just got back from an Iron Maiden concert. =D You lucky bastard. They are on my short list of must see bands. They won't be around much longer either I'm sorry to say.

I'm just shocked that Bruce stayed still long enough for his pic to be taken...

Was never a fan of 'cock rock', but the dark metal of Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, et al was more my end of the scale. Currently rocking out to the modern phenomenon 'Masterdon' ^^ www.youtube.com/watch?v=11eis4XVfVE(couldn't get embedded going)

Ok. Let's talk neo-classical and progressive metal. As the name might suggest, neo-classical metal is nothing more than classically-trained guitarists who decided to apply their skills to heavy metal. The most famous guitarists in this style are Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads (Crazy Train-era Ozzy), and Steve Vai (the protegee of Joe Satriani). This style of metal, more than any other, requires an incredible degree of techincal skill and speed, but also a kind of smooth elegance that escapes guitarists like Eddie Van Halen; www.dailymotion.com/video/x8d9sc_randy-rhoads-and-ozzy-osborne-mr-cr_music(youtube took down the video so I have to do daily motion) Progressive metal is a combination of progressive rock and metal. It has a similar sound and feel, but isn't as technically demanding. The two bands I associate with prog metal are Dream Theater and Queensryche. As a side note, despite being a fan of thrash metal, my ultimate goal is to have a neo-classical/prog metal feel to my own personal style. To do that, I need to study the likes of Jimi Hendrix as well as learn how to play classical music. It's going to take a while.

That bit about the punk-rocker with flowers in their hair could have referred to someone in the pacifist branch anarcho-punk, but I highly doubt it.
My pet hate: the majority of the assholes in black metal. They're the lot who was burning churches back in the 90s along with a bunch of other dodgy shit. Grow the FUCK up. Yeah, you're an angry metalhead, we get that, but you're damned lucky the rest of us didn't take your worthless arses out behind the bar for a good old-fashioned curb stomping.

Nausea is really the only band that actively promotes this, quite ironically. Awww look at how happy they are. Try picturing this when listening to their music, I dare you. You talking about the fans or artists of black metal? Because they vary from band to band, and of course, person to person. I don't always listen to Black Metal, but when I do feel the occasion, I listen to Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone, and Rotting Christ.

The only black metal band I listen to to any extent is Merciful Fate. As for the church burning shit that was mostly in Norway by the likes of Burzum, Emperor, and Hades Almighty. There's also a substantial sect within that group (both fans and musicians) who feel that more church burnings are needed. The brunt of this happened in '93 and '94 but it's still left its mark on the metal community.

Varg Vikernes loves that shit. Also Merciful Fate kicks ass, but I'd hardly classify them as Black Metal. While they retain quite a few elements, they're still largely British style heavy metal.

Yeah, that's the main asshole of the bunch. 4 counts of arson plus a murder charge and he only got 21 years (max under Norwegian law). Meanwhile the rest of the metal community has to deal with the fallout of he and his buddies' bullshit. Not saying that's what all of the people in black metal are all about, mind you. It's a matter of several jackasses who ruined the genre for me until very recently. King Diamond is easily one of the most kickass vocalists in music history. Doesn't he have something like a 4 or 5 octave vocal range? Anyways, he and Mercyful Fate were part of the first wave of black metal back in the day.

Regardless, you shouldn't tap out if the largely idiotic mass media has a go toward the metal scene every time some dickhead with long hair and black clothing torches a church. Keep your head up, Iron, and don't turn your back. I remember Rush Limbaugh saying that "Heavy Metal music" like Drowning Pool (no srsly) is what's poisoning the younger generation... in 2012. Regardless, I just like to laugh at clueless baby boomer idiots rather than rage at them when they blabber about things they don't understand.
We should probably take the rest of this to the Heavy Metal 101 thread, come to think of it.

We should probably take the rest of this to the Heavy Metal 101 thread, come to think of it. You got a point. Can't let a few assholes ruin it for the rest of us. Hell, I'm the guy who's usually telling everyone else to lay off on the metalcore scene (they're as metal as the rest of us, despite whatever stigma that goes along with them). And I'd love to get ahold of Dee Snyder and see about arranging a festival that would have Twisted Sister, Danzig, The Misfits, The Sex Pistols, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Guns n' Roses, The Ramones, Vagiant, etc all within earshot of Tipper Gore's neighborhood. The trick would be making sure the bands and fans play nice with one another while giving a collective "fuck you" to the PMRC. And this isn't even the beginning of how petty I can be if pushed to it. And if one of our gentlemanly mods would be so kind to take these posts to the metal 101 thread, I'd appreciate it.

That's a good lineup, but you'll need a few more, particularly the Dead Kennedys. Their lead vocalist already gave Tipper Gore the most amazing thrashing on Oprah back in the late 80's.

Nice verbal smackdown from both him and Ice-T. And Tipper was right: it wasn't about "right wing morality". It was about control; plain and simple. Look at how the PMRC and their "parental warning" label has become commonplace, to the point where major retailers won't carry many albums with that label, instead requiring a censored version of said album to be produced if that artist wants sales from that retailer *cough*Wal-Mart*cough*.
The telling thing is that she claims to be a "liberal Democrat" while putting restrictions on free expression; hardly a "liberal" mindset in the dictionary sense of the term. If anything she was sounding like a female Rush Limbaugh in that clip.
On a lighter note, that bit I mentioned about getting the bands and fans across the various metal and punk scenes to get along long enough to give a "fuck you" to the PMRC reminded me of a time when one of my non-metalhead friends (he's more blues, jazz, and classical) inadvertently walked into the local hardcore punk bar. Needless to say things got a bit sporting for a few minutes until I got him out of there; he's the kind of guy that'll make the hardcore guys want to beat his ass on sight. Good times.
