Well, this is basically so's Lily and I can fangirl out to our musical-loving-hearts' content, but the rest of you are welcome to join in!
So. Favorite shows and showtunes. Discuss.
Here are a couple of my favorites (in no particular order): Rent, Sweeney Todd, Lion King, Guys and Dolls, Aïda, Les Miserables, The Fantasticks, Phantom of the Opera, Spring Awakening, and Wicked (eep, I know, how plebeian of me and all, but it has the sublime Idina Menzel)
edit: oh, and A Very Potter Musical, of course. Anyone who hasn't seen that doesn't deserve to live.

I like musicals. ;D
Phantom of the Opera is my favourite, Les Miserables and Cats too. And I also really love Little Shop of Horrors.
For a less well known one, I think Cannibal! The Musical (a super-low-budget, jokey film by Trey Parker before South Park took off) is great. Some of the songs in it are actually very good, I think.

I should probably brush up on my musicals experience... As for RENT (the reason this thread was started - thank you, Aerecura, for being a Lovely Lady after my own RENT-lovin' heart!), I just watched a few YouTube videos of various songs, including "Goodbye Love" and "I'll Cover You Reprise" and I now have a rather damp face from all the tears. My best friend, who I used to live with, used to come home from work to find me curled up on the couch bawling with the RENT DVD on the TV, and the song might be either "Without You", or "Goodbye Love" (as a deleted scene) or "I'll Cover You Reprise", or "Your Eyes". Though the I'll Cover You Reprise" is the one always guaranteed to make me soak a box of Kleenex with my rivers of tears... I'm such a sap...

Buch, I love Little Shop too! And I like the singer's voice in the video you posted...I'll have to check that out. I feel that it is my duty to eddicate you about some of these shows, then. Youtube time! Spring Awakening is about the youth of late nineteenth-century Germany discovering their sexuality in a very buttoned-up society and the fallout from that discovery. Except the lyrics and staging are all very modern. It's an awesome concept and has goooorgeous music. Well, if you don't know what Wicked is about, then you're probably living under a rock ;D Even though these lyrics aren't the best, I just love the sheer belting power and effects...shallow of me, I know...(The novel is my favorite book ever, and the musical is still great, it just completely misses the book's depth). Lily, I completely, completely agree with you about those RENT songs. God, I wish I knew you in person so you could come over and we could have a sobfest while belting out the lyrics in a decidedly off-key manner. Except you live in the vast Canadian hinterlands somewhere (I'm sorry, I don't really mean that, it's just that we Americans are brainwashed into making jokes about America's Hat whenever the opportunity strikes)

Hello I'm Clint. I'm straight and I like musicals.
*Waits for group to say hello*
It started when I was a child and I watched classics like "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" "Sound Of Music" "Mary Poppins" "Oliver" etc. I really got to like the brassy sound & the snappy lyrics. My favorite would have to be "Music Man" (by which of course I mean Robert Preston)

I live in Nova Scotia - the coastal entryway to the vast Canadian Hinterlands... ;D The Hinterlands would be further inland, whereas I live right in the city that can boast of the Halifax Harbour, and as a city, especially our Downtown area, Halifax can be very very touristy in the summer. Though I must say, I'd never heard of Canada being referred to as America's Hat before - that made me laugh, Aerecura, thank you! ;D I appreciate good Canada Jokes; I love when they write those jokes into the show "How I Met Your Mother" and the other characters are teasing Robin about being Canadian... lol One of my favourites was actually done by Robin Williams, who referred to Canada as a "Loft Apartment over a really great party - 'Ey, keep it down, eh?'" and also "Canadian currency is also called the loonie. Now how can you take an economic crisis seriously? 'The loonie is down!' 'Oh how sad for you!'" Gods bless you, Mr. WIlliams... Anyway, back on topic, as to our desire for a tear-filled RENT-fest complete with off-key singing, I am usually rather on-key - until I start sobbing from the emotion of the songs, that is... Then I sound awful... My favorite would have to be "Music Man" I love The Music Man! When I was in Gr. 11 my High School put that play on, and I played Ethel Toffelmier! ("Pick-a-little, talk-a-little, cheep cheep cheep talk-a-lot, pick-a-little-more!") I loved being in that show... ;D

Heh, I remember watching a bit from Jon Stewart where he likened Canada to an odd neighbor living in the loft upstairs who would sometimes bang on the floor and say "Hey can you guys keep it down?" I actually get quite a kick out of how many of you folks look at Canada.

That song is a masterpiece, I think. I didn't really like the movie or its album - but THAT one is pure gold.

Oh and someone mentioned A Very Potter Musical - so this link is obligatory too:
'I don't mean to be tongue-in-cheek 'But that's literally what you will be doing in a week'

Though I must say, I'd never heard of Canada being referred to as America's Hat before - that made me laugh, Aerecura, thank you! ;D Heh. Heh heh. In my Southern hamlet that's probably the terminology used most often Anyway, back on topic, as to our desire for a tear-filled RENT-fest complete with off-key singing, I am usually rather on-key - until I start sobbing from the emotion of the songs, that is... Then I sound awful... Oh lord, tell me about it. One of my best friends and I sang "Without You" (she was Roger, I was Mimi) for one of our graduation events this spring. Funny, isn't it, how crying can close up your vocal cords something awful... And Buch, I love that kind of fan musical! Pretty much what I would do with my life, given the choice and a slightly better set of pipes...
