I think we all have to write a mary-sue at least once in our lives, to get it out of our system. Of course, you invariably learn how boring they are, become a better writer, and move on with your life. If you don't, well... you might find yourself in the link over in that thread about fanfic that's so horrible it's good. That's just my opinion though, no need to go spreading ti around

Devils' Night Necropost!!! (tm) ;D
Now then. For Halo of Flies, I've been trying to figure out the significance of Ian's abnormal brain activity that was noted by the doctor who examined him immediately after his relay accident and how to tie it in to what's happened in the story.
My current line of though is that he's subconsiously processing a much larger amount of information than is typical for a human (think a kind of Bene Geserrit-level of observational skill that he's not consciously aware of). It would explain how he managed to bring down that Krogan in a bar fight (he figured out where to strike for the greatest effect), how he managed to take down those guards in his run against the Blue Suns, and how he MacGuyver'd his way out of some deep shit on Omega.
The problem with this is I'd be toeing the line with making him a Marty Stu, so I'm thinking that he's good, but not infallable, if he mis-interprets the info, it can screw him over and/or he can have some epic brain farts to balance out this trait. Also, he'll still remain at human levels of physical ability: he won't be able to suddenly beat Wrex in an arm wrestling or headbutting contest, nor will he be able to suddenly do calibrations like Garrus.
Finally, I'm planing on really messing with him to give him some critical issues to deal with as well as have the karma gator give him a good old-fashioned bite in the ass pretty soon.
So what do you guys think?

All sounds good, maybe make him titter a bit out loud like Mordin or the Doctor.

Well to use your Bene Gesserit analogy on his ability to process information. He doesn't really have conscious control of it right? In the Dune books, the Bene Gesserit adept train from infancy in their ability to handle such things. That is part of the reason Paul didn't go nuts when he drank the water of life. My point is that Ian, could very well have this abilioty but could in some ways be crippling if it manifests due to information overload. Back to Dune, Paul was nearly crippled by seeing an overwhelming number of outcomes, most of which showed him dead during his duel with Jamis. He adapted due to his training. Ian doesn't have this training and may well be paralyzed with indecision or fear.
Bah! what do I know.
You'll figure it out.

Hmm... that very well could be a crippling weakness, Linders. And it would take a fair amount of time for him to learn to use what is relevant and disregard the rest. That's a pretty elegant solution to the Marty Stu problem. Thanks.

Your welcome. I'm just glad I made some kind of sense there.

Speaking of Mary Sues... I found a thing online that made me giggle... it was a girl making fun of Mary Sues in the Harry Potter universe... The Photo Album of Cleolinda Jones... I just love this...

Your welcome. I'm just glad I made some kind of sense there. No worries. Just to clear one thing up. I'm not saying in gets to Muad'Dib levels of precognition; just the incredibly refined awareness of subtle details around him. And thanks to plenty help from VincentSoulshift, I've got Ian's main critical weakness/flaw lined up. Not going to spoil it, but let's just say that it's enough to leave him with some serious issues.

Yeah, I got that. Muad'Dib was closest thing to a God and pretty damn Marty Stu despite Herbert's efforts of reeling him in.
I was really focusing more on the sensory overload aspect
