22/2/2017 - Since no one wrote it in the thread and I do like this story to be completed, so it now a story of it's own. Same format mess, same characters, same magi bullshit.
Is it March the first already? I can't tell while I'm in the land of Oz. And I haven't installed all programs on my PC, so I might as well wing it and hope I hit that 100 close enough.
1st March, 2016
The NYPD had surrounded the premises. They finally got a lead that someone is brewing illegal beverages, down in some cafe. One of the cops, who goes by as Detective Thomas Walker, took off his fedora and grab his pistol from his holster. He rushes over and crouch right next to the entrance, while his co-worker does the same.
"Ready?" Thomas asked.
"Ready when you are."
"On a count to three. One. Two. Th-"
Then out of nowhere, a truck just flew out from the first floor, a loud roar deafen their ears. There was a manic laughter, that echo throughout the area. It came from the driver, who was in his early forties. A large black asshole, who had a cigar in his mouth. A fedora hat was still plopped on his head, despite the ungodly pace of the truck. The black suspect wave at them, flashing his glistering white teeth. The truck then landed with a thud, the tires screech on the ground, while kicking up smoke and burnt tar. Then it began to flee.
The cops were bewildered by the scene that played in front of them.
"Don't just stand there! After that scoundrel!" Thomas growled.
But they couldn't. The truck disappeared when a portal appear all the sudden.
And Thomas was the only cop who saw that.

2nd March 2016
"That went well," Thomas grumbled, before taking another bite from his patty melts.
He was at a diner establishment with his partner, Detective Jake O'Connor. Customers are starting to flow in, despite being close to midnight. Thomas scoff quietly one of the customers. A white man in his mid twenties, who seemed to show signs of intoxication. He knew where these customers are coming from.
An undiscovered speakeasy.
Then Jake interrupt his train of thought, "Never seen a black guy make a get away that fast before."
"Tell me about. He drives that truck so fast, that I thought I'm seeing black holes."
Jake almost choke on his fries.
"You need to check your eyes, Thomas."
Thomas rolled his eyes, "I'm not in the mood for jokes tonight."
Then all the sudden, the world around him became still. He quickly got off his seat and tried to shake Jake.
"Jake? Jake? Can you hear me."
No response.
Then a portal appear in the diner and two magi in strange attire stepped out. Thomas rubbed his forehead. This is not his night.
"Come with us, Detective Walker," One of the magi ordered.

3rd March 2016
The Magi lead Thomas into the Tower, a magical spiral construction, that glisten many different spectrum of the colour wheel. They walk through marbled halls and lead him towards the door.
"Raphael the Curator is waiting behind this door," One of the Magi spoke.
The door opens. Thomas raises his eyebrows and stepped into the room.
He wonder if this whole thing was a dream, that he's actually sleeping at at his workspace, in the early hours of the morning.
Thomas pinch himself a dozen of times, trying to wake up from this absurd dream he's in.
"Don't bother Detective Walker. This is not a dream, but the actual reality you're now witnessing."
Thomas looked up in horror as he saw the figure at the other side of the room.
It's his ex.

"Oh shit! Uh, I mean, hello. I didn't expect to see you there, Bella. I know you're itching for a chat and all, but I just realised I've got overtime tonight. Uh, I'll be going now," Thomas quickly bid his ex a farewell, before he rushes to the door.
He struggle to turn the nob, both clockwise and anti-clockwise. But no dice.
Then his ex replied, "This is an unexpected reaction from you, given your occupation within the law enforcement."
Thomas then turned, "Wait a minute. You're not my ex. Who the fuck are you?"
"I am Raphael the Curator," The figure that resembled his ex replied.

"Are you fucking serious? Why did you transform into my ex? I almost had a fucking heart attack!" Thomas asked, in a apprehensive tone.
"My apologies, but my form represents the negative aspects that mirrored your life. There's nothing I can do to stop that," the Curator answered.
"Fine. Fucking whatever. Let's get to business, why did you drag me into this god forsaken tower?"
A paper and a quill floated towards him.
"You've been awaken, after seeing the works within the higher realities, which you saw before with a certain mage that you tried to apprehend," the Curator replied.
"Are you shitting me? This whole fairy tales bullshit is not a lie?"
"You'll understand and accept how the universe runs once you sign the papers."

6th March 2016
It was day shift. Thomas Walker, now awakened and blessed as Keaning, was trying to focus on his work. But the surroundings in his office distracted him. He started to see many peculiar things, due to his recent new perception of the many realities. He saw O'Connor is complaining about not having enough coffee in his mug, despite no one had touched it. Before his awakening, Keaning would have assumed that his partner is drinking it too fast, not noticing the speed of his intake. Now, he knew the real reason. Someone in the office is using a space magic spell, that transfers a good amount of content. into another mug.
"How the fuck I get into this mess," Keaning mumbled to himself.
Then, one of his co-worker approach him.
"The lieutenant wants to see you."
Keaning sighed, "I knew it. He's going yell at me for failing to apprehend that smug ass bootlegger."

Keaning knocked on the lieutenant's door.
Someone answered behind the door, "Come in."
Keaning open the door. His superior was sitting behind his desk, who was just finishing shuffling his files. He gesture Keaning to the seat in front of him. He nod courteously and sat.
"So, Detective Keaning. I've heard the suspect got away yesterday," The lieutenant remarked.
"Uh yes. He caught us off guard and..."
Then Keaning realised something.
"Did you just use my mage name?" Keaning asked.
"Of course. Word travels fast in our world," The lieutenant replied.

8th March 2016
Things had not been the same since Keaning's awakening. Not only he was reassigned to a department that is full of magi, but also now he had a new partner. A veteran mage, who was awakened long before Keaning was. His mentor, Valastron, was showing him the ropes of the world that Keaning was newly introduced.
"You've been around in this country since the American Revolution?" Keaning asked, as he was driving to their destination.
"Certainly. I would have moved back to France, if it wasn't for the other Revolution back in my home country," Valastron replied.
"Did someone put bounty on your head or something?"
"You see, I was once a nobleman. The French commoners were bit... uneasy with my linage at best. Worse, some people want to see my head on a spike, so I've took refuge here."
His mentor took another puff from his cigarette, while Keaning took a quick observation at the man, before he focus back on the road again.
"It's not all bad," his mentor continued. "America had a nice clean slate at the time. Good place to start anew, away from the burdens of the nobility expectation."

"That reminds me," Keaning's mentor remarked. He reach down to his briefcase and pulls out the dossier. He open it and Keaning immediately recognised the photograph. It was the black suspect that he ran into before. He was responsible for causing Keaning's whole life turning into a 180.
"I know this man!" Keaning pointed it out.
"Me too. Been trying to haul his backside to prison for a very long time."
"I didn't know the two of you come along way back. Is he dangerous?"
"Danger? No, just a massive nuisance, this Nightbear gentleman."
"Nightbear? What kind of a name is that, Valastron?"
"Don't know. Why don't you ask him, when we get to his other shop."

10th March 2016
The two detectives were walking into the bookshop, when one of the shopkeeper approached them. She was a black woman in her early twenties, looking apprehensive. Which is unsurprisingly, given the two white detectives showing up in their area.
"Can I help you with anything?"
Valastron pull out his badge, "Detective Jimmy Phelps. We're here to see Anthony J. Williams. Is he here?"
"Yes, he's in. I'll go and get him," The shopkeeper replied before she walk into the back room.
As they waited, Keaning browses over the collection and took notice at one of them. It was an old book, called Confessions, written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Normally he didn't cared for those riff raff philosophy books, but the book held him in interest, because it was not translated from it's native language. He wondered how a French book managed to find its way into a dingy bookshop, especially in a black neighborhood.
"Ah, that's a good book, if you can speak French."
Keaning looks up. He was staring at Nightbear, the person of interest, just a few feet away.

Keaning was barely able to restrain himself from the urge to shove that smug bastard into the wall, despite Nightbear being a seven feet towering monstrosity. He gave Nightbear a nasty glare.
"Detective Jimmy Phelps. NYPD," Said Valastron.
"Anthony J. Williams. Just a regular bookworm in the neighborhood. What can I do for you?" Nightbear asked.
"A regular bookworm? That remains to be seen, Williams," Keaning remarked.
Nightbear looks over at Keaning, eyeing from head to toe. That made Keaning nervous for some reason.
"That's your partner, Detective?" Nightbear asked.
Valastron replied, "Yes. This is Detective Jamie Harper."
"Green I assumed? Straight from the Curator's office?"
Both of them were stunned at Nightbear's sharp observation. Before one of them replies, Nightbear continue in a low tone, "We have an understanding then. Follow me to my backroom. We'll talk."

They walk to the backroom. Nightbear taps with the door nob with his index finger and a single click was heard. He turns the door nob with ease.
"Right this way, officers," Nightbear gestured them to the room.
"Detective, Mr. Williams," Keaning corrected him.
"Whatever."
They step inside and saw the workstation. Keaning gives Nightbear an accusing look.
"I fucking knew it! You're a bootlegger this whole time!"
Nightbear walks up to his station and continues creating his concoction.
"This is not a amateur setup up of a distillery. This is a professional workspace for an alchemist."
Keaning looks back at his mentor. Volastron nodded sadly at him, confirming Nightbear's confessions were true.
"Would you like a sample of my potions?" Nightbear asked.

"No," Keaning grumbled.
"You're sure? Good to ease the headaches, especially with your current occupation," Nightbear replied.
"Not when your potions and remedies contained alcohol."
Nightbear tossed some strange herbal substance into the alembic and starts boiling. He tilts his head at Keaning.
"Small amounts. Not enough to cause intoxication or breaking the law."
"One of the speakeasies we've busted recently, had your creations in their cellars," Volastron accused him.
Nightbear raised his eyebrows in bemusement, "Is that so? Well, someone is desperate enough to use my potions for their cocktail mixture. Is the former owner held at Sing Sing? If he is, I'm going to make the trip and ask for his recipe next time."
Keaning slams the table with his hands. His anger was swelling up, "Quit fucking around, negro. We're the law here, you best not forget it!"
"Of course I'm aware of that. I'm also aware that the NYPD had an abysmal record in solving crimes."

"You're sassing us, negro?" Keaning threaten the alchemist.
Nightbear observes the chemical reactions in the retort, as the substance started to glow and bubbling. He showed no reaction to Keaning's disgust.
Then Nightbear replied, "Sassing? No. I'm too below the law to do something bold, such as handing out criticisms like candy. I'm just stating what I've seen so far with the headlines."
"The papers are exaggerating," Volastron retorted.
"I guess so. However, there's some truth behind their dramatic articles. You see, I had to patch up one of my customers the other day, after a major shootout between two rival gangs."
"Why didn't they notified the NYPD?" Keaning asked.
"They were afraid of you lot. There are some cops who are happy to keep things quiet... permanently. And us ordinary folks just want to get on with our lives, instead of being six feet under in the dead of night."

"Are you implying that we're in bed with those bootleggers?" Volastron asked, his voice seemed to show signs of defensive.
"Nah. I'm too uneducated to do some basic detective work, you know," Nightbear replied.
"We're done here. Come on, Keaning. We got more people to visit today."
Volastron walked out of the door. Keaning could have sworn he heard a huff from his mentor. As he about to leave, when someone held him by the back of his coat. It was Nightbear.
"What do you want?" Keaning grumbled.
Nightbear leaned over and spoke in a low voice "A word of wisdom to take away."
"Fine. What is it?"
"Do learn from the masters, but never follow them. Keep that in mind when your mentor is showing you the ropes."
