Kelly Chambers: Agent of Cerberus

(First one, please be gentle.)

(Kelly/Tali Rated M)

"Kelly, I'm a bit concerned about Tali'Zorah," Miranda leaned forward towards her desk while talking, and Kelly wondered yet again if Miranda was aware of posing or if she was unconscious as to her training. "I would like your opinion."

You'd like more than an opinion, Kelly thought. "Tali is a great addition to the crew. She's warmed up to the engineering staff, but still distrusts Cerberus as an organization and refuses to work with EDI more than is strictly necessary. She's intensely loyal to Shepard though."

"Crushing like a school girl is probably a better description," Miranda dismissed.

"Can I speak frankly ma'am?"

Miranda gave her that infuriating smile and nodded.

"John Shepard seems to have that effect on people, including the two of us."

"Yes, I am well aware of my own jealousy in Shepard's affairs, but my primary interest here is in the success of the mission. While we've covertly tweaked his medical implants to minimize the risks, our doctors suggest that full-contact exposure between Tali'Zorah and Shepard would result in temporary but significant loss of combat effectiveness for her and a distraction for him. And that's a risk I'm not willing to accept."

"Tali'Zorah has been facing considerable stress in recent months. Most Quarians at this stage in their lives would be living as part of the Migrant Fleet among people who share their taboos and courtship rituals. Even before joining our crew, she's spent considerable time on missions well away from her home. She's isolated among a species that has cultural prejudices against hers. And although the treason charges against her have been dropped, there are significant questions remaining about that incident."

"And your conclusion?"

"Tali likely sees herself as an outsider, even to Shepard. She's unaware of his, um, xenophilic sexual tendencies and that he strongly values loyalty in his sexual partners. She does her best to bury her loneliness and need for affection in her engineering work. She's also a young adult and almost certainly dissatisfied sexually."

"And Shepard?"

"Although he intellectually understands that two years have passed, it's not an emotional reality for him. His reunion with Dr. T'Soni is likely to be strained if the psychological profiles of her are accurate. If that's the case, he's likely to initiate a relationship with Tali."

"The Illusive Man and I have come to similar conclusions."

"I expect you have," Kelly's own private correspondence with the Illusive Man had focused on this problem. Miranda could be trusted to stick to the mission. Jack was a human shotgun, who worked as long as you pointed her at a target and braced for the kick. Tali was another matter.

"Kelly," Miranda gave Kelly her best smile. "It's in the best interest of the mission to have Tali working at her best until after we hit the Omega 4 relay. She hates me and what I stand for, but you could talk to her."

"Seduce her you mean?" Kelly said bristling.

"We'll leave that to your judgment, this is why we trained you after all. But the important thing is to have Tali focused on the mission and not distracted by Shepard."

Kelly nodded, Cerberus sponsored her career in xenopsychology. They worked with her love of alien cultures to mold her into an effective agent. And while the mission was important to saving lives, using her skills to help Tali become more comfortable on the new Normandy would satisfy both sides of her professional ethics.

--

Miranda heard a knock on her office door, she checked the security camera, smiled to herself, and waved Tali in.

"Commander, um Ms. Lawson?"

"Ms. Lawson will do, how may I help you Tali'Zorah?"

"There, there must be some sort of mistake with the shore leave roster," the Quarian started. Miranda tried not to grin.

"Yes, you are scheduled for 12 hours of leave and partnered with Yeoman Chambers, I don't see the mistake."

"But Ma'am, I can't take shore leave at this time," Miranda looked patiently at Tali, and prompted her to continue. "There is still zero-point-zero-five variance in port shield coupling flux that I've not been able to fully compensate for, and there are some optimizations to Garrus' bridge code for the main guns that could give us an edge, and with the other engineering crew taking leave as well, there's the routine maintenance that is critically necessary. And I've been rotating an additional set of firewalls on the engineering systems now that we have that... thing... on board."

"Engineer, I fully expect that you can have all those things done and in place before taking your leave."

"Well, yes... but then..."

"Tali'Zorah vas Normandy, do you have a specific problem with Yeoman Chambers?"

"No, it's not that, I mean, she's really nice and has been rather friendly since I joined the crew, it's just..."

"You seem to be under the impression that shore leave is an option, and it's not. I've paired you up to protect your safety while you are on Illium. If it makes you feel better, think of yourself as Kelly's bodyguard, but you will be off this ship during that time. Do you understand?"

"Yes, ma'am."

--

Kelly spent the first few hours of her shore leave following Tali across the trading floor. The Quarian dived into the technical specs of items on sale, purchased some items on the Normandy's budget, and scoffed at some of the prices of others when they relaxed at a bar.

"They want eighty-thousand credits for a mere 50 samples per square centimeter neuro-stim?"

"Is that bad?" Kelly asked.

"My own suit has a virtualization layer of more than twice twice that. And sampling density in my gloves approaches 250 samples per cm-square, standard-issue equipment for most of us working in the field. But I suppose it's more an issue of recreation rather than necessity for Asari."

"I'm sorry, what does that mean?" Kelly prompted.

"Our environmental suits are not like your dumb armor. We have selective pass-through sensor-stim arrays that allow us to feel what's going on outside. Pressure, temperature, and so on. It's most useful for things that require fine motor control, but it also allows us to feel the integrity of our suits."

"Sounds like it could be painful in combat."

"Oh, we can control the sensory feedback, and it's not as good as bare skin by any means, but it would be difficult for us to do detail-oriented work otherwise."

"I overheard a young Quarian suggesting more intimate uses." Kelly winked, and ordered another round of drinks.

"Oh yes, some people say that you can get addicted to too much neruo-stim use. I'm not certain that idea takes into account biological adaptation feedback mechanisms though. Other races think we're standoffish because of our suits but we're quite affectionate through our suits. We have to be because it can take weeks to reserve a clean room. Human affection in comparison just seems so... I don't mean to offend."

"Messy?" Kelly offered.

"Risky, dangerous. Just kissing is a big risk to us and is something that we don't do outside of clean rooms. If you are going to share saliva you might as well just, um, mate, have intercourse?"

"Fuck?"

"Fuck I guess. Although it's interesting that Jack seems really into fucking but not so much into kissing."

"Wait, Jack?"

"Please, the Normandy is practically a palace compared to Quarian ships, and she makes is hard to not notice. I suspect she likes making Keneth and Gabriele uncomfortable."

"I wouldn't base my opinions of human sexuality around Jack."

"But the vids as well. Human sex just seems so wonderful and terrifying. Sharing each other's breath, mixing sweat, saliva, and um, other fluids. Tears, old human movies where the hero kisses away tears," Tali shuddered with a mix of horror and arousal, and took another sip from the box. "You humans just take it for granted in a way we can't."

Kelly saw opening and took it, "It hasn't always been that way for us."

"Really?"

"There's a lot about human history that we are not exactly open about. Before we got access to Salarian medical advances, sexually-transmitted plagues killed millions of humans back on Earth. And it's not as if sex and reproduction was a picnic aside from that. Before nanotechnology, women still died from childbirth."

"But humans were one of the fastest-growing populations in the galaxy? Why didn't you stop?"

"Well, a lot of people choose to simply take the risks. Some though, developed ways to minimize the risks. Some people became monogamous, others developed ways to have pleasure with little risk of fluid-based disease transmission." Kelly pulled the most clinical language from her sexuality courses to impress. "Using physical barriers to protect sensitive areas, low-risk sexual practices, use of technological aids. This sort of thing allowed for some humans to have things like sport sex with relative safety." Kelly reached out across the table and touched Tali's hand.

"What is this, 'sport sex?' Those words together sound like they would be a contradiction in terms to humans, similar to a..."

"Casual sex between friends, or strangers, that's centered around mutual pleasure, but ..." Kelly moved her hand back. "... without a commitment or any pressure. It could just be two people talking dirty to each other, or more than that. Whatever both partners feels comfortable with."

"We have, something similar. But I, I always was told that humans wouldn't be satisfied unless they can share ... environments."

Kelly laughed, "There are pushy people of any species. But someone worthy of a long-term relationship with you will be willing to respect your limits, for however long it takes."

Tali blinked, and crossed her arms across her chest, "Wait Ms. Chambers, why are you telling me all this, and buying me all these drinks." Kelly saw the omni-tool activate.

"You're measuring my heart rate and pheromone levels?" Tali nodded. "Kinky. Professionally, I'm ordered to advise and suggest alternatives to sharing environments with anyone before we finish the mission. Personally," Kelly lowered her voice to a whisper knowing Tali's sensitive suit could pick up the sound, "I wouldn't mind being that alternative. I'm attracted to you as a friend and shipmate. I want to get to know you better, including how I can use that neuro-stim virtualization layer to get you off. And knowing that you can read me like a book right now gets me hot."

"So um, what you call this 'sport sex,' thing. How do we?"

"Tali, look," Kelly said. "As far as I'm concerned, I've achieved my mission from talking to you. I want a shower and a bed that doesn't feel like a coffin, and if we go out later, I want a change of clothes before nightfall. You can come with me or head back to the Normandy if you wish. And I'm truly sorry if I offended you."

"Ohh, I think I'm more confused than offended, I know that some humans are attracted to aliens, and some are attracted to members of the same sex, and I know that gender is generally important to humans."

"I go both ways, and does the fact I'm female bother you?"

"Kelly, you're human. Ohh I should just shut up."

The hotel room had two beds. Kelly had paid Gabby some credits to sabotage the air exchanger just enough to make a soft hissing noise, and the hotel some more credits to keep the maintenance issue unfixed. "I wasn't giving you a line when I mentioned that shower by the way," she said. "I plan to abuse my water privileges."

"Feel free to use mine as well, we use ultrasonic mass effect fields to keep our suit exteriors clean."

"Oh," for a moment, Kelly was tempted to pull Tali into the shower with her, but thought better of it. She brought the packages that had been delivered with her into the spacious bathroom. Kelly turned on the water and stepped under the stream. "Mission parameters achieved Miranda," she whispered into the shower head. "Now fuck off and leave me to my fun, and don't assume her omni-tool can't find the bugs."

After a languid half-hour, Kelly stepped out of the shower. She left her uniform a rumpled mess in the corner, and changed into a conservative set of loose leggings and a long-sleeved top she had picked up when browsing the stores. When she came out, Tali was replacing the cover on the newly silent air exchanger. "Bosh'tet!" the Quarian cursed. "Sorry, someone hadn't done maintenance on it properly, I had to fab three replacement screws and use a dab of universal tape. Someone didn't do their job properly."

Kelly sighed and sprawled out on one of the beds. She giggled, rolling over and rolling back several times, enjoying the feel of a bed big enough for a Krogan. Not that it would support a Krogan weight, or that Krogans used beds like this.

"So, is this the part where we fall into each other's arms and do um, sport sex?"

Ouch, cross-cultural misunderstanding there, "The tour guide says we have a few hours until the clubs get hopping. Let's just hang out for a bit, eat some food, watch a cheesy vid or two, and relax a bit. Kick off your boots and guns for a bit. And we can see what happens."

"I find human norms and customs so confusing at times, is this what you call a date? Should I flirt more?"

"Tali!" Kelly groaned with exasperation. "Relax, we're two friends on shore leave. I'd like to hook up with someone while we're off duty. But we've got a whole day." Handle gently, and with care Kelly thought. "Now do you prefer Shithik or Ranthic? Sorry there's not many Quarian menu choices."

"They got Shithik? Kesalah, I've not had Shithik in months."

"What is...? Never mind, I'm better off not knowing. It would probably give me a rash or worse. Why don't you queue up a vid?" Kelly keyed in an order for three boxes, grimaced over the expense, and ordered vegetarian Asari-Eden sushi for herself.

Kelly sat cross-legged on the bed while Tali queued up a human romantic comedy. Interesting, Kelly thought, our engineer definitely has a soft spot. "Is this ok?" Tali asked.

"I'm more a monster movie fan myself, but it's ok," Kelly fibbed.

"Do you, oh, do you mind if I ask you questions? There's so many things about human culture I just don't understand. Like what is this 'hanging out' and 'hooking up?' Pardon me if I'm too forward it's just that humans are so open about many things but closed about so much else. It's like you have selective firewalls..." Tali tapped something into her omni-tool, then started unstrapping bits of armor and weaponry from her suit, laying everything out in a specific order on the desk.

"I guess you can call it that, we're a pretty diverse race compared to others, so you might get different answers from, say Jack."

"I hope I didn't speak out of line. I don't want to get Jack into trouble."

"Whatever keeps her from ripping holes on the ship. She's Shepard's problem."

"But what is this, 'hanging out?'"

"Well, I suppose it's what we're doing now," Kelly struggled to explain. "Humans build friendships by having light conversations and being near each other. If I was with Dr. Chakwas we'd probably be knocking back drinks and debating the virtues of Cerberus vs. the Alliance."

A chime sounded as their food appeared in the service tray. Tali brought the tray over, and greedily sterilized the first of the three boxes, before slurping a thick brown liquid through a straw. Kelly carefully mixed the wasabi and popped a nori-covered roll in her mouth.

"We're not a very honest species when it comes to sex. A lot of people still have trouble talking about it."

"So, hooking up? I hope it doesn't have anything to do with cables or mass effect traction towing."

Kelly laughed, "no, it's just another euphemism for causal sex. Some humans tend towards monogamy, while some of us tend to have relationships without much in the way of a commitment. I'm, well, to be honest I'm quite horny but I don't want to start a relationship given what might happen in the future."

"Don't you, I mean we have neural stimulation hardware that helps with that," Tali spoke.

"Oh yes, we do that also. But it's not just about the sexual stimulation. There's some things that a neural-stimulation wand can't do."

"Like...."

"Hug, cuddle, pet," and kissing but that would scare her off. "And there's something about giving other people pleasure as well that we need."

Tali stared at the video for a while, and they ate in silence. "We have a word that doesn't translate well, but appears in many of our songs, Haala'pae. It's about wanting, and needing to live free just in our skins while fearing what the Geth, what we've done to ourselves. It's about how we're still sensual animals under our suits. And on the Flotilla we sometimes have casual relationships like that, but away from home you either just see the suits or want to get into the suits."

"Tali," Kelly said putting her finished tray aside. Slowly she slid behind the nervous young Quarian and wrapped her arms in a tight hug, "Just let me know if you want me to back off."

"Oh, hold on a second," Tali whispered in a hoarse voice. She pressed two fingers against hidden buttons on the arm of her suit, and Kelly felt the material under her arms become more flexible. "Turning off armor mode, I forget sometimes."

"Just tell me what you want to do," Kelly whispered. "Or what you want me to do. Or show me."

"Kelly...." Kelly felt a two-fingered hand cover one of hers. She sighed in disappointment as her hand was moved away from the shoulders, and was about to move away when Tali traced her fingertips, then pressed Kelly's hand against her breast. The suit felt like soft and thin leather. She found the outline of one nipple, then a second, and listened to Tali's breathing as she caressed the underside.

Another strong hand guided her other hand over ribs, then more ribs over the abdomen, reaching thighs corded with ropey muscle. Kelly's fingers glided over the skin of the suit, feeling Tali respond with each caress. When the thighs parted, Kelly slid her hand between. She spread her fingers in an imitation of a Quarian grip and pressed in, finding the paired pressure points on either side of the cleft.

"Yes," Tali groaned. She sighed and made another adjustment to her suit, then her head rocked back bumping into Kelly's. "Sorry... adjusting... virtualization... oh..." Tali reached back with a shaking hand to caress Kelly's face. Kelly smiled, turned her head, and took one of the thick digits into her mouth. Now there's a human trick for you. Tali shook and gave a series of quick gasps like hiccups as Kelly sucked deeply on the gloved finger. Then with a sudden movement, Tali closed her legs and bent forward, breaking contact.

"Stop. Please. Good. Enough," Tali said shaking. Kelly reached forward and petted Tali's back. "Please. No. Oversensitive. Overloaded."

Kelly giggled in spite of herself.

"Why are you laughing?"

"Oh, it's just that, you sounded a bit like Doctor Solus there."

"Please, it's not like humans are known for their poetry when you fuck," Tali leaned back into Kelly's arms.

"Tali, friend." Kelly said as she awkwardly clambered around into Tali's lap. She straddled the other woman's thigh and felt the texture of the environment suit through her own pajamas. She looked into wide glowing eyes and rolled her hips against the Quarian's surprisingly muscular thigh, seeking a good angle and rhythm.

"Kelly," Tali said suddenly.

Kelly sighed and stopped, the Quarian's arms around her torso. "I'm sorry, Tali."

"Oh, no! I just think, that if we move we can get more ergonomic leverage."

Kelly smiled, and felt strong arms around her waist pulling her down onto the bed. Legs flexed up under her, the double-jointed feet finding the edge of the bed and pushing them both back towards the center. "Ulf!" Kelly grunted and giggled, "you're stronger than I thought. I like that."

"Naturally, I work hard with heavy equipment," Tali gasped as Kelly's thigh found the right spot. Kelly's hands roamed over the other woman's body, identifying the similarities and differences with her own, how the muscles joined and flexed in unfamiliar ways, the slightly different shape and feel of the breasts, the broad plate of bone in front of the shoulder. She felt herself explored and examined as well, a tickle as her ribs were counted, three-fingered hands playing with her five. Tali spent some time exploring the different reactions she could coax from Kelly's nipples, apologizing and moving on at a brief yelp of pain. The exploration continued to Kelly's waist, then her hips, tracing the waistband of her leggings.

"You can go on," Kelly panted. "I'm not a Krogan."

"No barbs for the unworthy male? I'm glad you're not. I'm curious, do you mind?"

Kelly responded by pushing the hand against her skin, then down into her leggings. The hand turned, and caressed the labia with the sensitive friction pads of the glove. It paused at the entrance, then moved forward toward the clitoris. Kelly gripped the other hand in her own and closed her eyes. "There," she said. Then, "lightly," and "a bit faster," and finally "yes, there, don't stop." She rotated her hips against the thick and nibble finger, and stifled a groan in the back of her throat as her orgasm flickered up her spine and through her thighs. Then she rolled away, falling onto the bed beside her shipmate and friend.

Tali stretched her arms above her head, and whispered a soft line of Quarian. "Enjoy the small pleasures available today, that we can live for more tomorrow?" Kelly translated.

"Oh Bosh'tet Kelly, that comes off so bad in translation. I'm really sorry."

"Why are you sorry?" Kelly asked.

"It's just that, shouldn't I be saying something like, 'oh, that was the best I ever had. I didn't know it could be like this.' Not that I'm complaining, not at all. You are certainly quite skillful at hooking up. Oh, that came out wrong as well."

"Thank you. We have another Old Earth saying, Tali. 'If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.'" Kelly curled around Tali's torso. "Today, I'm with you."

"And tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow, we save the galaxy. Today, I can think of a few more pleasures I'd like to enjoy with you."
